NYS is looking to reduce rock salt usage for environmental reasons

The number of clear and dry road accidents on roadways, is all out of proportion to road conditions.

Inability to control a vehicle is normal...people (women, and illegals) think they are driving a toaster..................Many auto ins companies have been consolidated.........that way they many times insure both vehicles.

Last trip on I-90, I stopped at an Applegreen...thought I was in a foreign country........I was the only American.
Muslims, Hindus, Chinese,............NONE OF THEM LIKELY HAD DRIVERS LICENSES..............BUT PROBABLY VOTE.

I don’t want it banned for me to use it at home. My neighbors sump pump discharges on my sidewalk and I salt it almost daily when freezing temps are there. I don’t want to have to chop it or blow them in to cause other fights. They do nothing so it will do no good speaking to them. The inspector will get wise to it soon because they will get letters about their peeling paint and horrible roof soon enough.

I'd still tell your neighbor they need to reroute where their sump discharges, that it is causing a hazard, and they have no right to discharge their water waste on your property and they need to cease immediately. And I'd do it via certified letter. Not for them, but for you. You want a paper trail on this.

Let's say someone slips and falls because of this. If it's your property or right of way you are going to get sued, doesn't matter if it's because of your neighbor or not. Lawsuits for directly impacted individuals generally are attached to the property they occur on, and absolutely in something like a slip and fall. However, if you have evidence that a third party has created the hazard, you have informed them and demanded they cease, you now have the opportunity to counter sue so you don't get taken to the cleaners. If you don't notify them, you'd have an almost impossible time using the "it was their fault" defense.

Brine is made onsite from salt and locally sourced water. There will be less transportation costs because they are using less rocksalt, which indeed is racist.

My gut reaction is to tell NYS to flock off on any change they consider. You can bet your ass any changes made by this god foresaken state will make your most valued concerns worse. If a change was going to improve your life in a meaningful way, ny bureaucrats wouldn't voluntarily suggest it unless they made a buck off it.

Sand/cinders/gravel is a clean up hassle in the spring. Ditches and storm drains get plugged up from spring melt and have to be dug out. Its also harder on the roads. Many small towns have gone from sand to just salt because of this. The math supposedly works out to use a more expensive product for less wear and tear.

At my old house, I used coal ash on the ice sheet in my driveway. Didn't melt it much, but gave it traction and worked a hell of a lot better than trying to melt it down with bags upon bags of salt.

We are in a rural area so clean up not a a real problem a lot of gravel roads so no prob. there. we always had to clean ditches every year as we still do so not a lot of diff there even on paved roads. but I agree would not work out so well for cities or larger towns would be to much clean up to make it pay off

So here's what's really going on. They're asking for input......but don't need it. The decision has already been made. There's a political donor who owns a company with a product that already exists. They need a market for their product. That donor / company has already worked out a sweetheart deal with a politician (kickback numbers already hammered out) and as soon as a reasonable amount of time has passed for "public input", they'll make it look like they entertained information and make an announcement. The state does not want your input. They are fully capable of making all the decisions for you.

I support this. The billions on damage to vehicles caused by salt is off the scale. I try to work on my vehicles but sometimes I get frustrated with rust.

I find if I make an effort to park my car equally on both sides of the road during the winter the car will rust uniformly and be a piece of shit in no time...

I was visiting my beloved in-laws in Kansas City, KS at Christmas couple years ago. The wife's old man was salting his driveway like a madman. I said to him - "that's a LOT of salt isn't it?". He said "Salt works great - I love salt!". Unfortunately for him after he finished he headed inside and slipped on the ice on the unsalted porch and almost cracked his ass. I was a great day all around
They used to come here to NY quite often for Christmas but since COVID I seem to come down with that every season just before the holidays...

The only salt I would use was Solar Salt. The types found in water softeners.

Im actually happy about this. The fucking salt is a nightmare to vehicles. The rust from one season of salting was insane on my pickup.

In PA they use sand and it works perfectly fine. When I go up to my house in Lake Ariel I have zero issues.

Most of those states freely use chloride deicers but not as much as NY by far. The salt belt in recent decades has stretched well beyond the NE. They really love magnesium chloride out west which is can be more corrosive to steel than sodium chloride.
About the only place where salt is not used on roads is where they get no snow or ice.

One of the observations I see is over-plowing, where the asphalt gets uncovered which then turns into black ice with too much salt and no/minimal sand usage. Can lead to very dangerous situations, not just driving, but walking too. One place comes to mind is Utica, NY. The salt to sand ratio they use in that damn city is like 90% salt and 10% sand. Makes it an ice skating rink, while the rest of the towns and villages that use more sand perfectly fine.

As a person that digs a lot and works on infrastructure that is contained outside, road salt just kills anything electrical quickly. I don't care how well sealed it is, or what type of connectors or enclosures. It gets in there over time. I also see in the ground in curb areas and what not, a white glazing in the soil as far as 3-4 feet down as the salt just builds up in the soil table.

If they switched over to just sand, I would be much, much happier.

Only around places like Denver. Barely used at all at altitude and in the colder plains parts of the state east of Denver.

CDOT is in love with a mag chloride mix that it calls "Ice Slicer". Love that name. But it's only effective down to 16 degrees, and the mountain roads are all much colder than that for the night and much of the day. So they dump sand instead. At key intersections the mountain towns drop some sort of rock mixture.

Getting a set of Blizzak DM-V2s proved to be life changing when driving up there. I have barely had any traction issues even in super blizzard conditions.

They also have a "traction law" that severely penalizes motorists with poor treads that get stuck. I think it's a minimum $500 fine. Think how many idiots in NY are driving around on bald tires.
