The real problem is that the decline is not linear. A 4% drop this year will accelerate as the break-and-butter of the taxpayers — the upper middle class — run for the hills.
NY is facing a fiscal crisis of unprecedented proportion and is in a slow motion train wreck. The issue of high property taxes suddenly being undeductable has really made a difference in the willingness of folks to remain. I probably couldn’t sell my house now unless I paid someone to take it.
