Online VS Local Shop?

Sometimes gunbroker sells guns for less than i get em wholesale...up to $25 more than i can buy them for. Once shipping to me is figured im screwed.

I hear you man. When we re-locate to TX in late spring this year, I will be opening a small LGS, but I will be offering the related services/accessories and online sales also. The margin on firearms is too low to be attractive as a sole purpose business. My small shop will share floor space with a relative's hardware store, so the economy of scale and shared overhead will help. But I see it as a hobby rather than an income, so we'll do OK. Besides, doing the tequila shooters is more fun in the state where the spirit of freedom still lives! NY sucks a BIG smelly turd and so do the leaders of the state legislature and the residents of the governor's mansion. So much for wealth and power being the goal in life, huh?

i'm in albany, most of what i buy is online as most of the local shops are priced very high, (a certain group charges 50 bucks for a transfer), i buy in big chain stores when they have good deals. and i made the drive down to Bulletguy in tilson for my last transfer and i wish they were closer to me, for such a small shop the prices are great and they are good people. which is much more than i can say for a lot of shops up by me.

What, you don't want to pay 350-400 bucks for a no name lower, or $1000 for a featureless M&P15? lol

I have exactly zero qualms buying online.

That's why I love kitchen counter FFLs.

I do it almost exclusively now. When I bought my SR 22, even with transfer fee included, it was still >$40 cheaper online.

I get the working with the LGS thing, and even bought my 500 online because Buds is dumber than shit on a fence post and wouldn't sell me one, but I will not be ripped off for the "privilege" of buying a gun in NYS.

It's big in the diving community too. "Buy from the local dive shop, or else when they close, who will do your air fills !?"

Nope, not paying $300 more for the same BC for a scare tactic. Let them all close. I'll buy a compressor and rake in.

For a local shop, Bullet Guy gave a friend of mine who bought a few rifles a good deal last week. He gave us all average pricing on everything we bought for what you would find it online for and no shipping, just a 2 hour drive for me and the merchandise was in my hands. That works for me.

On the other hand down here in Westchester, back when I was looking for a Remington 700 for my XLR build, I was looking for the bottom end ADL just for the action. All the other parts off the rifle I sold. The local shops around here were asking up to hundreds over MSRP and nothing extra was done to the rifle. I know everyone hates Dick's but at least they weren't price gouging and that's where I bought it. I am all for supporting the local economy but not at a price that's close to double.

If it's a full service non box store gun shop I've gotten my money's worth. An FFL is one thing, a competent gunsmith is priceless. I'll buy cheaper beer to afford better firearms. Think, spend and carry like your life depends upon it.

Last gun shop I pursued wanted 50 cents a round for PMC 55gr 5.56 and 60 cents for Lake City XM855! I can get it for less than half that online!

When they tell me that the Federal Hydrashoks they have are the same as Federal HST but just repackaged and refuse to order the rounds I need and instead try to push those or Hornady''s on to me , I'm forced to go online.

When they tell me that a Keltec KSG or an SKS is an AW and they can't do the transfer, I'm forced to drive to another county that will do the transfer.

They are closing shop because they want to. I'd rather buy from them then do the whole gun broker thing.

I've purchased guns both online and in the store... obviously online is almost always cheaper, it's just the way it is. I do still try to support local by buying ammo and using any gunsmithing services they have. Also if you're looking for something a little more exotic, it is of course easier to find/buy online.

If the cost of running a business in this state was lower, it would probably lead to lower prices for everything... just sayin'...

I believe the new regulations limit the ATF issuance of FFLs to only those people in a brick and mortar location. Along with everything else that goes with it! You know, taxes, insurance, regulatory fees, etc., etc., etc.
