Pa. school board rejects NRA grant for rifle team: ‘It’s blood money’
A Pennsylvania school board on Monday voted against accepting a nearly $5,000 NRA grant for its rifle team.

The Stroudsburg Area School Board voted 6-2 against accepting the grant of $4,730 from the NRA, which members of the rifle team had applied for, The Hill reported.

Two rifle team members who spoke to the board at Monday’s meeting said their equipment is severely outdated.


“Rifle practice helps me calm down and de-stress,” team member Isabelle Strauch said before the vote, the Pocono Record reported. “It’s a mental sport, like chess. We need new rifles to be more competitive. The ones we have are from the ‘60s and ‘70s.”

School board member Michael Mignosi, who voted for the grant, said the rifle team had been “underfunded” for years, which is why the team applied for the grant from the NRA for the first time, The Morning Call reported.

n a heated meeting, the Stroudsburg Area School Board voted against accepting a nearly $5,000 grant from the NRA for its rifle team, with one school director calling it “dirty money.”

At Monday’s school board meeting, the board voted 6-2 to not accept a $4,730 grant from the NRA. An AP analysis published earlier this month showed that the NRA has given more than $7 million in recent years to 500 schools through grants.

“This is dirty money,” Director Alex Reincke said before the vote, noting that he loves hunting and the rifle team, but did not think it was acceptable to receive the NRA grant. His words were met with applause from parents.


“I’m just curious, when you say dirty money, what makes it dirty?” Jakobsen asked Reincke.

“I didn’t want to bring national politics into this but unfortunately we have no choice,” Reincke said. “The NRA is a group that has transformed from a bunch of people who liked hunting in the ’50s to something that quite frankly is a hateful, divisive group that seeks nothing but to push guns on people.”

Texas has my eye too, I can take a transfer but have to do different work.

Donations Pour in for Rifle Team After School District Rejects NRA's 'Dirty Money'
A Pennsylvania high school rifle team is being flooded with donations from local businesses and residents after its school district voted to reject a National Rifle Association grant.

The Stroudsburg Area School District's board voted 6-2 Monday to reject the $4,730 grant, the Allentown Morning Call reported, with one board member calling it "dirty money."

The president of a local contracting company, upset by the decision, spearheaded a fundraiser in which several businesses bundled more than $6,000 to replace the grant money.

Nine local businesses came together to raise more than $6,000 for Stroudsburg rifle team. Superintendent Curry said he's thankful for the donations to help team. 21 kids are on rifle team.
