McMaster called on President Biden to “reverse course” in the aftermath of Thursday’s terrorist bombings in Kabul, urging him to scrap his deadline for pulling U.S. troops out of Afghanistan, cut off dealings with the Taliban and launch a new war on terror against jihadi networks throughout Central Asia.
“What we saw today is just the beginning,” McMaster said in an interview with Yahoo News about the deadly attacks in Kabul. “We are going to see horrible image after horrible image. … We’re going to confront the steady drumbeat of horrors inflicted on the Afghan people. The move, detailed to POLITICO by three U.S. and congressional officials, was designed to expedite the evacuation of tens of thousands of people from Afghanistan as chaos erupted in Afghanistan’s capital city last week after the Taliban seized control of the country. It also came as the Biden administration has been relying on the Taliban for security outside the airport.
The list issue came up during a classified briefing on Capitol Hill this week, which turned contentious after top Biden administration officials defended their close coordination with the Taliban. Biden officials contended that it was the best way to keep Americans and Afghans safe and prevent a shooting war between Taliban fighters and the thousands of U.S. troops stationed at the airport.

Remember, the State Dept (DoS) and CIA are one team. The White House and Pentagon are another team.
♦ TEAM One – The Department of State is aligned with the CIA. Their media PR firms are CNN, CNNi and the Washington Post. Their ideology is favorable to the United Nations. Their internal corruption is generally driven by relationship with foreign actors. References: Hillary Clinton, Clinton Global Initiative, John McCain, Qatar, Muslim Brotherhood, Samantha Powers, Susan Rice, Cass Sunstein, Brookings Institute, Lawfare, China-centric, Senate Foreign Relations Committee, Council on Foreign Relations.
♦ TEAM Two – The White House is aligned with the Pentagon (DoD) and National Security Council (NSC). Their media PR firms are domestic in nature. New York Times, Politico, etc. Their internal corruption is generally driven by domestic influence. References: Barack Obama, George Bush, Wall St, Big Banks, Multinational Corporations, Defense Contractors, FBI (state police), Judicial Branch, and community activists writ large.
Both teams are highly political. However, the State Dept/CIA team consider themselves above political changes; essentially the deeper Deep State.
With the DoS/CIA aligned with CNN/WaPo, when the Pentagon needs to defend their specific interests in crisis management, they must go elsewhere, hence Politico.
Modify the focus of your review of events in/around Afghanistan to see the connective tissue between CNN, the State Department and CIA [strongest institution within the Intelligence Branch]. Then keep in mind, the Senate is in alignment with, and a facilitator for, the Intelligence Branch. As a consequence, the institution of the Senate will align with the interests of the State Department; and, by default align with the CIA, intelligence community and CNN/WaPo reporting.
The modern U.S. State Dept is an independent, bureaucratic, and massive foreign policy institution that does not accept any oversight. They are able to accomplish their independent position by partnering with intelligence agencies. The Dept of State use the U.S. Intelligence Branch as a weapon against any individual or entity who would attempt oversight.

I’ve convinced myself that State Dept had undue voice in the decision to abandon Bagram
Yes, it’s obviously the more defensible footprint from which to have conducted the withdrawl. A militarily secure base with multiple air strips, barracks and mess halls, hangars and facilities from which to fly drone and fighter-plane missions, wide view planes of any approaching threats, you could quickly deploy ground forces, drones, even Blackhawks to thwart any attempted perimeter breaches.
I can’t imagine real military commanders having permitted giving that up.
The mumbo jumbo they released was that there were not enough forces to defend both Bagram and the Embassy
So the decision was made to give up Bagram
Why? Appearances … an entirely political decision
They could have kept Bagram and moved diplomatic functions there
But …. ooh, that’s a bad look
America can’t maintain an Embassy in Kabul?
That would “look” like the country wasn’t as secure as everyone pretended it was
And I believe State Dept lobbied long and hard on Biden to choose the Embassy
And I can’t believe the Military couldn’t prevail in that decision
So the civilian airport ended up being our staging area for withdrawal / evacuation / surrender / turning tail … sorry … for “retrograding”
Where the “perimeter” to defend ends up being a meter wide:
— from the airport wall that our soldiers have their backs up against
— to the sewer trench 2 steps in front of them
So for a week I’ve been convinced that Dept of State had undue influence on that Bagram decision
Today on Fox, Rep Mike Garcia of CA said roughly the same on Shannon Bream’s show, I’m waiting for a clip to post
My ear tuned in part way thru his interview and I heard some words to the effect “and at that point it became a Diplomatic mission than a Military mission”
Either in that interview or another, I heard a couple words about “and they said ‘No, that’s too many troops”, I think it was in regard to the discussion about defending both Bagram AND the Embassy”
… and I think that was referring to the fact that it’d be a bad “look” for State Dept interests
… and I think it was State Dept making that call

Would appreciate all looking for info on that decision, clips if avail
There’s gonna be some inquiry into that Bagram decision, I’ll bet – I think there’s be a couple cranky Republicans who are gonna want a hearing on it.
