People Moving Out of New York State by nearly 2-to-1 Margin

The amount of people moving out of New York State is almost double the number of people moving into the state.

Recently we wrote about new census estimates that showed that New York was the number one state in terms of people moving out.

Well, United Van Lines’ 40th Annual National Movers Study found that 63 percent of moves in New York State were of people moving out-of-state. 37 percent were people moving into the state.


New Jersey and Illinois tied with New York for first place in outbound moves at 63 percent. Connecticut placed fourth at 60 percent.

New York, New Jersey and Connecticut made the list of top outbound states for the second straight year, the study reports.

In New York, 24.3 percent left the state due to retirement. 21.28 percent for family, 17.67 percent for lifestyle and 6.51 percent for health.

South Dakota, Vermont, Oregon, Idaho and South Carolina were the states with the most people moving in, the study found.

just how poor is the educational system in NY if these kids stay? If they have been in the state for four to six years getting an education, then they already understand the system and should be planning on using their education to take them anywhere from the northeast.

well, there is even a bigger issue at stake here.

The people/families that are leaving, are the INTELLIGENT ONES. Not because they were smart enough to leave. They are truly the people with IQ's above 100 (which is considered about or slightly above average on the Binet bell curve for intelligence)

This is a major "brain drain" on the state. Being in the HVAC business, I talk to a LOT OF PEOPLE. In the last two weeks, out of 42 customers I have talked to, 33 have told me flat out they are leaving within 10 years or when they retire. They can afford to stay in NY, but they would be much more comfortable and much better off in another state. They would have MUCH more disposable income in another state. Giving them more freedom to travel or buy larger pieces of property (land--not house size)

add in the fact that New Yokistan is now a "sanctuary state", means the King wants less intelligent and more welfare people to make up for those leaving. Which, in turn, can only lead to more taxes. Or in King cuomo's case more "creative accounting" practices to balance the budget.

People move when they retire due to things such as weather, health, family, taxes, political climate, SAFE Act, etc. Retirement might be an inducement to move, but it's not a reason people move. To say people move "due to retirement" is disingenuous and ignores the real motivations people leave. You can't stem the outflow, if you don't correctly identify the problem.

People move when they retire due to things such as weather, health, family, taxes, political climate, SAFE Act, etc. Retirement might be an inducement to move, but it's not a reason people move. To say people move "due to retirement" is disingenuous and ignores the real motivations people leave. You can't stem the outflow, if you don't correctly identify the problem.

"due to retirement" is a very good reason to move. Some people do retire here, but those people are the more affluent and probably are staying because they have good financial planning or more importantly they don't want to leave family behind.

Also, the older I get the harder it is to leave. I bought a new house a decade ago. Guess what it's worth now? The purchase price plus all the stuff I put into it (basement finish, deck, pool), plus about $5k. That's downright @*#&ing pathetic. So I have no equity to put a down payment on a house outside of NY anyway thanks to the 3.5% property taxes crushing home prices! I guess the good news is I am thinking of upgrading and can do that easily because the same house I want now was....basically the same price 10 years ago lol

Well, before I left NY I was facing repeated cycles of unemployment, kept getting laid off. My total tax burden one year was a whopping $85! I survived on the charity of family. NY certainly didn't collect much in the way of tax revenue from me. Since I got into trucking, an out of state opportunity BTW, my income has tripled and it has been PA that has reaped the tax revenue of my increased earnings, not NY. There is nothing in NY for so many people, so many of us had to leave or look outside for improvement of living. NY is an economic zombie, kept on Wall Street life support.

My home will be paid off in May. My wifes car will be paid off next month. our credit cards are now under control and i hope to be debt free by the end of the year. in 9 years, I AM OUTA HERE. Unless someone comes up with a radical new tax relief plan. somehow I doubt that's going to happen

I finally convinced my wife that we need to get out of this shithole state and now it's all she talks about. A move to Florida is in our one year plan (we are both in our early 30's so retirement has nothing to do with it). We can sell our house here and using the equity we have in it, buy one down there for the same price thats twice the size and half the taxes in a very nice area. A family with a combined income of 100k will see 7500 bucks in their pockets right off the bat due to no state income tax alone.

There is just absolutely no reason to stay in this socially engineered state.

Right, but the article cited retirement as a reason people move, which is misleading. Ask retirees why they aren't retiring in NY - their answers are the reasons they're vacating the state. Whoever put that data together sugar-coated the results.

My Wife and I decided 1 1/2 years before leaving that we were going to be GTFO of NYS, at that point we went balls out to make it happen. We actually closed on our home down here a year before our move. We used it for vacations for the final year, while we got it how we wanted it. Then 3 weeks after I retired we were gone. I realize not everyone can do it the way we did, but what I am saying is that if you are planning to GTFO of NYS, the "pre-move" period can be pretty cool.

High tech (IT) companies like Google, Oracle and Microsoft generate millions in tax rev for states but they employ only a few hundred employees. Companies like Remington, GE, Grumman..ect
employed thousands - more people benefited.

My wife and I will be migrating in 2019, upon my retirement. Our main reasons for moving are high taxes, long winters, sucky firearm laws, and the prevalence of liberalism. So yup, retirement is an enabler. We'll be heading down to Tennessee, where at least the winters are short, taxes are significantly less, and the guns laws are much more permissive.
