I was reading on a LGS's site a statement from the Oswego County clerk in which he states that over 45000 permit holders have recertified online so far:
Earlier today I had the opportunity to ask several questions about re-certification directly to representatives of the New York State Police. Lt. Heptig and Sg...t. Jackson both addressed this process and I have summarized the discussion below.
As of Friday, 1/20/17 about 370,000 letters were sent by State Police to pistol permit holders whose permits were issued prior to January 15, 2013. Several larger downstate counties were omitted from this mailing due to their local re-certification provisions. To date, 45,646 people have "re-certified" using the website statewide. That number does not include any hardcopy submissions and has not yet been broken down by county. State Police will enact a campaign to continue to keep re-certification on the minds of pistol permit holders, but no further details were shared.
The role of the licensing officer (County Court Judge) is yet to be determined in this process should a re-certification result in a permit being revoked. In other words, how a revocation happens is yet to be determined.
The communication between NYSP and County Clerk's was originally set to be an annual report of who has re-certified, but that may change. Notification to permit holders reminding them of their need to re-certify every five years is also being considered by NYSP.
As you can see from the above, re-certification is still a work in process with many questions left unanswered. As more information becomes available I will continue to update this page so please share, like, and follow.
