Positive Experience with NYS Trooper

I had read a thread on here recently where people were talking about leo experieces and thought I'd share mine.

Last night on way home got pulled over by a trooper. He walked up a little behind door asked if I had any knives or dangerous weapons; Said No Sir.......then asked for my license...told where it was and ok if I got it...asked question again about weapons, happened to say "No sir, not carrying tonight...." to which he asked if I had a PP and I said Yes and he gave me the thumbs up and said "GOOD, what I like to see...but doing ya no good if your not carrying...... "

Now this caught me off guard as I've heard many a LEO does not like avg joe having PP's....In fact when I took my safety class the officer/teacher said to all of us as a matter of fact first thing that he didnt think ANY of us should have a weapon.......or had a need for one. (in his opinion- he thought it was a bad mix..weapons and civilians) Also I had the Po Po called on us sorta a couple years ago when someone on our road called for report of Gunshots...now we in the country(honeoye) and I tend to shoot in my back pasture....with my backdrop the neighbors hay field and big stacked wall of old RR ties...when he saw it was me making the noise he walked down asked to see my permit and said "you have the right to do it...but I dont like it.....guns are not toys"...I said "I know agree"...he said "i dont think so cuz yer down here shooting 'em off"- I was practicing?!

Back to last night-It Ended up being my headlight was out which I had just noticed it day before and last night got the bulb to replace it...showed it to him he said Good...your on it......have a good night!!

i was surprised and glad that this trooper had a respect for the 2a and was glad to see people using it.

Ive been pulled over by a trooper in croton and we had a 20 min discussion about guns ,really nice guy.
Ive also been pulled over and was met with screaming and cursing and insults on the side of the road from some asshole trooper and I beat the ticket in court fuck you.
Must suck to have to babysit highways instead of being a real cop that actually protects their communities.

Sounds like a good encounter all the way around.

I get why an average LEO might dislike citizens carrying. Their perception of most are shined in a negative light due to the nature of their work. I think as the average LEO has more and more positive encounters with the average carrying citizen that mindset changes.

I wonder how many encounters the typical LEO has in their career with one of us.

True...I get what your saying and it actually makes sense..if exposed to negative things concerning something makes sense you will form an opinion of that......

I think while most LEO support people carrying, it also adds a degree of difficulty, which they're often unprepared for, when entering a situation with an active shooter. So that might be why they're nervous about people carrying depending on what they're responding to. If it's a traffic stop, and it's one person who is complying, it's fairly straight forward for them to understand the situation.

Took a local police oriented course last year. Any officer who spoke on the subject of civilian gun ownership was in favor of ot and even their "tactical" guy thought everyone should have an AR. Was refreshing.

My buddy is a trooper. His montra: Be civil with me, I'll be civil with you. Act like an asshat from the get go, you're more than likely going to get a ticket, or new bracelets.

Me personally, I have never heard a cop say that he does not like the average guy to carry. Well, maybe one other cop I know, he is a wicked Liberal.

The first thing he asked was if you had weapons in the car? I thought they were not allowed to ask that unless they see something to make them suspect you may have a weapon?

Got pulled over by a local cop last week abut 3 miles from home. Turns out both license plate light bulbs were out. Ran my license then sent me on my way to get them fixed. I was carrying at time - he didn't ask, I didn't tell. No issues.

yeah if they dont ask...I wont offer up information...NY not duty to inform so.....but I ask before I go for my wallet just so they know what Im doing as im sure they appreciate knowing whats going on during the interaction.

I did exactly that - said I'd be reaching for license in my pocket and registration in the glove box and got the ok before doing so. I also roll down windows an driver's side and turn on interior lights as a courtesy.

LE are not our enemies, nor are we theirs. When everything goes to shit, and it's coming, those of us in the law abiding gun community and the Consitution respecting LE community need to come together.

You should have informed the instructor of some minor facts.
Concealed carriers commit LESS crimes than LEOS.
LEOS commit suicide FAR more offten than the general public.
LEOS commit domestic abuse more than the average public.
And, LEOS are charged with assault, manslaughter and murder FAR more than the general public, even when the numbers are accounted for.

The last one has to do with the nature of their job vs. the average person, but still.

So, why does this guy believe his rights are more important than ours.

Before the onslaught im going to try to find the website I read these "stats" on.
It was one of the national LEOS websites.

huh...did the same...turned on...I said so you can see........ agreed..show courtesy get courtesy..as in my younger days I didnt "show: as much courtesy as I probably shoulda...big mouth!!!

The dude just doing his job....I try not to get all worked up.... I was trying to think why did you stop me should I not have turned right on red..then though my headlight..prolly it!!

I've had way more experiences that wound up neutral or benefitting me than I've had where I felt I got screwed over. And believe me, back in my younger years i caught a couple of absolutely HUGE breaks.

There are assholes in every occupation.

My experiences with LE has been mostly positive my whole life, - until I applied for my CCW. Of course, now I live in NC, and they are much more gun friendly here. Not so much, the Orchard Park PD Chief of Police Mark Pacholec. IMHO, he is a lying SOB who will smile to your face, and talk nice, while he stabs you in the back, and tries to keep you from finding out what he does against you. He also signed the national letter from various Chiefs of Police who are opposed to National Reciprocity.

I have only been stopped once while driving since I began carrying (happened in Matthews, NC), and the officers were great, - no issues, and no ticket either.

Wasn’t there a court ruling that made it a no no for them to ask about weapons just because of a traffic stop?

Answer: yes there was the NY court of appeals decision In dec 2012

I respectfully disagree. There was a case Out of the Bronx that was decided in I believe 2012. A group of friends were pulled over and the officer asked about weapons. One said he had a pocket knife. They were taken out of the car and the car was searched. 2 bb guns were In the trunk. (The guys were from upstate and didn’t know nyc laws). Owner of the car said they were his so only he was arrested. Case went through lower courts then appeals till it was ruled that by asking about weapons the officer put the driver in a situation were he could incriminate himself or perjure himself. I may have some details wrong but the general idea is there.

I'm Not OFFENDED that he asked...I would expect nothing less so doesnt change my mind any- they should be able to ask for all involved. Id want to know.

CRAP..I just forgot from reading a couple of posts above...I had my pocket knife on me and did not disclose that to him...thats it...LOCK ME UP!!!!

Whenever a cop asks if you have weapons in the car after a traffic stop for a ticketable traffic offense, he is fishing for an arrest that goes against his oath to the Constitution. Plain and simple.

I wouldn't call it a positive experience.
