Rather silly but impressive that any connected at all, 1000 yards is well outside the 5.56 envelope and with an SBR no less!
My setup will be a Daniel Defense 16" gov't profile CHF and chrome lined barrel, free floated by an extended 15" MLok rail. I will be running the same Larue MBT trigger and the scope I'm still waffling on. Just learned that last summer Voretx released a lightened version of the outstanding Razor 1-6, the HD-E Gen II. 21oz vs 26. Still above my 20oz target weight but the Razor HD line is so excellent I may overlook that fault. I will have to get over to Eurooptic and check out the Trijicon Accupoint 1-6 the Vortex Razor 1-6 and the fantasy high dollar Kahles Ki6 1-6 side by side to see how much money I'm really willing to burn.

I think with a 16 inch barrel, 77 gr or 75 gr Gold Dots would do well at 500 yards.
The interesting thing about that is the Mk12 SPR was developed in response to the Seal's request for a rifle with better range and precision than the standard M4A1. But the Mk12 isn't what they really wanted. All they really wanted was an accurized 14.5" M4 with a variable optic and ammo that let them reach out farther than the M855A1 or M193. That is what the "Recce Rifle" concept is all about. Something that bridges the gap between the door kicking M4A1 and Mk12 SPR, which is a proper Designated Marksman Rifle.
The Recce Rifle is supposed to be useable up close in across the room distances and also be able to effectively engage out to 400 meters or beyond. It's not ideal for either role but its is an acceptable all rounder. I actually think it is more useful to the civilian shooter.

Me too. 300 should be cake as long as I practice sound fundamentals. I could do it with iron sights back in the day but it required focus. And a day in which the weather didn't consist of sideways rain. Which was sometimes the case on qual days, which I always considered to be a big "fuck you" from the brass.

It's not an officially defined concept so it can be whatever you want it to be really.
IMO a Recce rifle is either a 14.5" or 16" barreled rifle with a low powered variable and with some attention payed to keeping the weight down as much as is practical. A standard M4A1 with a 4x ACOG and shooting 77gr Mk262 meets the bare parameters. I would personally also specify a free floated handguard of some kind though, such makes supporting the rifle without affecting POI via barrel pressure much easier.
A 16" barrel is more common, gives more flexibility for mounting a variety of muzzle devices, including suppressors and gives a tiny little bit of extra velocity for hardly any increase in weight or compromise in maneuverability.
I therefore favor that length for the concept.
The 18" barrel I think is not as suitable for this role, being better off on a more dedicated precision rifle. Again just in my opinion.

Yes. It took some searching to find the correct heat shield to fit the heavy wall barrel, but Mossberg does make them.
Mossberg does, but I read it can only be installed on a barrel with the bead sight. Mine gas the ghost ring sights.
Aimpro offers one that works with my gun.
