Personally, I think standard old prison time is losing it's deterrence factor. I mean seriously, - look at it. We see people committing murders, and getting sentenced to prison for 20 - 40 years, and it's like it doesn't even bother them.
Then again, why would it. Many prisons today now include dorm style rooms; cable tv; 3 hots and a bed; a commissary; library; free medical; recreation; sports; conjugal visits. Shit, - you name it, - they have it! Meanwhile, law abiding people are on "the outside" working our asses off, paying taxes and the like.
If you've never seen one, go back and watch one or two of the old back and white movies from the 1930's about living in a chain gang. I'm pretty sure that the vast majority of those fuckers, - IF they ever got out, had a pretty damn low rate of recidivism. Most were very fucking grateful for their freedom when they got out.
When I was a kid, my parents took us on a vacation or two to Florida, and Georgia. I can still vividly remember seeing lines of convicts in black and white striped uniforms chained up at the ankles to each other working along the roadsides. Whether it was digging dirt, or cutting down weeds, or picking up trash, they were doing it under the watchful eyes of deputies on horseback with rifles. I remember seeing that and thinking "shit, I'm NEVER going to jail, and living like that" No way!
It's time to bring that shit back, - chain gangs and hard labor, dawn to dusk. Maybe then, lowlifes will start thinking twice before going out and committing these heinous crimes.
