Putting Guns in Storage

As I prep for moving, trying to decide the best way to put almost everything in storage. Hopefully, not more than a few months.

Picked up a safe that will hopefully hold everything.

Option A - I can put it at my daughter's house in PA until we have a more permanent place.

Option B - Put it in the storage unit with everything else.

Let's assume that the storage unit is not climate controlled. If I go this route, I'm thinking tear everything down, clean well, and coat all the metal I can with RIG or something similar.

One, I can check on it regularly. Two, it would be nearby if I wanted something. Three, I wouldn't have to make another 1200 mile round trip when we get settled.

Any ideas, thoughts or suggestions?

I put my rifles in there respective cases. I oiled the crap out of them, bought a gallon jig of desiccant and put bags of desiccant in the case and put them in the "basements" of the Escape Pod. ALL the ammo is in one of the trunks (Basement) of the coach. So i should be complying with the FED travel rules, I guess if I get stopped, I'll find out the hard way if what Im doing is legal or not. Im going to unload the long guns at various places along my route out west.

I'll be keeping more than one with me. Just don't have room for them all in my temporary 200 ft² living quarters. If it gets to the point I need to rely on my 1921 Type 38, well, Im not sure what...

Around here, we have some indoor storage units. They have different levels like a 3-4 story building. They maybe climate control. They're gated, requires passcode to get into the building & security cameras (I've driven by them, never used them.) It maybe a bit more secure than the outdoor drive-up garage type storage unit. IDK ?? I'm not crazy about leaving valuables in a storage unit anyway.
Being that you'll be keeping a few guns with you. I assume you won't be needing the rest. if so, keep them at your daughter's. Won't you be visiting her for birthdays & holiday's?
It goes without saying, if you go the storage unit route, don't let anyone see you unload a safe/ guns into the storage unit. (imo they will come back later to rob you.)

For no climate control storage, wipe everything down with Break-Free CLP. Grease is overkill, unless contact with water is a possibility. Speaking from experience.

Had to store a number of long arms outside a low humidity controlled area for a good while when I went to Ethiopia...I used the following bags from Brownell's along with Rust-Blox Vapor Tabs from the same source...

The short vid on the above link explains the whole magilla.

When I used them, I sealed them closed by essentially melting the open end closed with a triple parallel seal using the corner of an ordinary clothes iron. You can probably still do this, although they don't mention it.

Not the cheapest solution, but I've seen nothing better.

I would definitely go with the storage with daughter option, more secure and climate controlled. Putting guns in a non climate controlled area can cause condensation from temperature fluctuations and therefore causing rust. I suppose you could always fill a 55 gallon drum with cosmoline and dump everything in that. (Being facetious)

Abrupt change in temperature causes condensation. Slow indoor change as in natural day to day weather does not.

As mentioned above, ensure that your agreement with the storage facility allows firearms. My wife's elderly aunt got into a shit storm in Massachusetts when it was discovered she had an antique rifle stored at a one. State police got called, took a whole day for them to figure out she violated the renters agreement...she got booted out...but no gun laws were broken.

Best part, nobody in wifey's family knows where the stupid thing even came from.

Good to hear. A little late and yesterday would not have worked anyway but if you need any help with this stuff just drop me a line glad to help however I can. Your post reminded me I also have a pallet jack which might have helped with safe. Maybe for next move... that goes out to all the NYGF deplorables by the way...

Thanks C. It was only 375#. Slid right off the back of the truck, stood it up and used a hand truck to take it through the garage and into her finished basement. Only two steps to go up.
