When the recent ISIS-inspired moron tried to set off a bomb in the Port Authority bus station on 12/11/17, we saw a lot of news footage showing NYPD officers in full tactical gear with M4 rifles.

Are those NYPD M4 rifles full automatic?

Which units or officers are trained and armed with these rifles?

Given that "the only reason someone has an AR is to kill a large amount of people as quickly and efficiently as possible" (common anti trope), which large amount of people are the NYPD trying to kill carrying those things?

No I don't subscribe to their magazine however our Security and antiterrorism folks send it to us periodically when they feel it may have something relevent for us to be looking for.

Heard something on the news that the train was behind schedule prior to the accident.Probably going too fast into the turn.I would think a terror attack would more likely be in a major metro area,NY,Chicago,L.A. etc.Too soon to speculate,just have to wait til they get things sorted.

Does the military still use SA / FA rifles anymore or are they all SA / burst?

Full auto has very little tactical use. It's mainly for suppressing fire, not direct fire on a threat. It's inherently inaccurate. There is no instance where police in a public space would ever need or should be able to use full auto. It's never a free-fire zone.

Honestly, I haven't seen many M4s in grand central terminal lately -- even after the attack. Maybe it's just a lower possible target, not really sure. Then again, grand central generally has perpetual national guard troops and LEO patrolling all the time, so the coverage might be greater is why. Or perhaps it has to do with the density of people in a given area that having them deployed there is more of a risk then benefit? Who knows.

The one place I regularly see them is outside the NBC morning show, right next to the rock center Nintendo store. At least once a week I see LEO in helmets, carriers, and with M4s. And that's always been the case, well before the attack happened at port authority. I'd say those guys have been doing shows of force there for at least 6 months, if not more.
