Well, I don't see why you'd have to drive if they're with your son. As long as he's legally in possession I think he'd be able to have them sent to your FFL in NY. The process can be different depending on your county but if you contact your licensing/permit dept they should be able to tell you how to do it. Some of them will say to bring the unregistered guns to them and they'll do some checking and issue them to your permit without receipts/transfer after checking if they are stolen and etc., but this actually seems more difficult than going the FFL route since the guns are in another state; plus that's never really good anyway because you don;t know how long they'll be and if something might just dissapear in the system.. or whatever. Best all around route is to just have your son send them from an FFL there to an FFL here. You'll have to deal with transfer fees, but that's the best legal chain of paperwork and everything to get it done.

Ask the Herkimer office.
My county would handle them as your ffl described.
Unless of course Ga let your son ship them.
I don't see why you have to do it

You might also want to check with your local FFL. There's a chance considering the situation he might be willing to accept the shipment from your son. If him and your PP office is OK with that you will only have to pay the local FFL to do the paperwork on his end.

There are no permit requirements / registration / other horseshit for ownership in GA, so I don't see why your son can't just ship them direct to an FFL here and you pay a transfer fee and pick it up.

Many New York-based FFL will not accept pistol shipments from an individual. Some may some may not. The easiest thing to do is have your son bring them to a gun shop in Ga have that gun shop send it to your gun shop in New York. Very simple

Just curious, why would a NY FFL not accept a firearm from an out of state non-FFL ?

Wouldn't that just amount it turning it over to the cops ?

I can understand why an FFL wouldn't want to pay for it, but just having it shipped to you, doesn't seem like it's any more risk than if they guy walked in the door with it.

Is that how it works? I dunno. My understanding is a NICS check is run on the prospective buyer, not a serial check on the gun.

Furthermore, guns stolen are not always immediately reported, and often times when reported not immediately entered or entered correctly.

In NY the system is set up to make being an FFL as onerous as possible. I can't think of one FFL (and I know at least 10 in this state) that wants to add more layers of bureaucracy to their operations, but all comply - or face losing their ability to operate in NY.

One of my FFL buddies will accept guns if accompanied by a copy of state ID. He got a lot of resistance from the out of staters, so he simply switched to "all incoming guns must come from an FFL". It has made his life easier, as he had one instance of a gun that came in from North Carolina that ended up on the streets. State and city cops didn't give two shits about that he got the gun from John Doe from Charlotte, NC on March 1, and here is where it was entered in his bound book...

For similar reasons a lot of NY FFLs don't give their FFL # to their customers who want to ship guns out / in.

Last, you may (or may not) know that a gunstore in NY had a devious employee doing all kinds of devious shit with some guns. Idiots like that make it harder for everyone else who make best faith efforts to follow the asinine rules.

Yes, NICS check on the buyer, and I get all the onerous BS, but a gun shop is in the business of accepting guns from the public (unless they only sell new, I don't know of any like that though). I don't see how the risk or hassle is any greater for a gun that the UPS guy carries in than a gun that any other guy does.

Check your county handbook. In Westchester the handbook says;

To purchase a firearm, you must first obtain the make, model, serial number of the handgun, and the name of the current owner or dealer (FFL and NYS firearm dealer license numbers) on a receipt for the firearm that you wish to purchase. You may then apply for a firearm license or amendment to your current firearm license.

Also;

If you are purchasing or selling a firearm on a personal basis with another licensed firearm holder or with a police/ peace officer (defined in the CPL) you are not required to obtain a purchase coupon (one will be provided if requested), however, a bill of sale listing by make, model and serial number the firearm that
is being transferred must be presented along with the appropriate amendment forms and required fee.

FFl who accepts gun from non-licensee should always get the original Bill of Sale, check signature, serial number and PP#, copy and file it along with copies of driver license and PP, then get a written statement from owner that gun is owned free and clear with no other claims to ownership (no co-owner claims and no money owing on it), and owner (transferor) accepts all liability and holds FFL harmless from any liability associated with entries through his books resulting from mis-representation by owner as to rightful ownership/possession. If owner balks at these terms, show him/her the door.

Moving back from Florida to Chautauqua county, I had to send my guns from an FL FFL to a NY FFL. The NY one said that it was a NY regulation. And I couldn't send them myself via UPS or FedEx, like the local ATF office suggested.

A few towns in NY require retail sales to specify if they are selling new, or used items. Harrison NY is one such example...I know this because the gun store that opened there recently cannot sell used items as they are not licensed to do so, and must make an application to conduct sale of used items.

I think there are certain instances in life where sitting on the sidelines will NEVER give you an appreciation for how involved a thing is.
Examples:
- shooting well, fast.
- grappling
- running a gun store in NY

When you tell me you have operated or worked at a FFL in NY for more than 8hrs and you think what I have written is as you have expressed, then I might take it under consideration, and ask you how in your experience could you make it better.

Until that time (where you have 1st hand experience dealing with this shitty state as a FFL) I don't think you fully appreciate the volume of insanity they have to deal with.

Is this true? Maybe I am in correct but I thought as long as the firearms you own are legal in the state you are moving to there is no need to send them through an FFL?

I have no doubt the fucknuttery a NY FFL has to deal with knows no bounds, I am just still unclear on what difference it makes if a used gun is carried into your store by a UPS guy, or just some other guy.

My father gave me one of his handguns and it came as a surprise to me that the safe act still allows transfers between immediate family without having to go through an ffl. What I had to do was have my father write a letter stating he was giving me the gun. It also had to have all the info on it (make,model,serial) and it had to be signed. I then took the letter to the clerk's office, paid my $3 and waited for my judge to sign it. So I could be wrong but you may be able to have your son write you a letter stating he's giving you xyz, you take that to the clerk's office, get your permit amended and then drive down to Georgia and get them. In any case I would definitely check with your county clerk.

I'd love to know more about this as my father is out of state and has a pistol he'd like to give me.

Why would you want to move back here ?? Most retirees from the NE tend to stay put down South.

Thanks. Built in '29 by my grandfather. Handed down through the years and now it's mine. End of a street, on Lake Erie. Nice and quiet here in the fall, winter and spring. But busy in the summer (think bikinis)

Still keep a Florida CWP, along with NY, PA, and Arizona.
Surprisingly health care is currently much cheaper here than Florida. Makes a big difference coming out of the wallet..
