recommendation for a new 308 long range bolt action

so feeling the need for a new bolt gun really would prefer another Remmy 700 with a 26" barrel and 1 in 10 twist but they don't make 1 anymore called them to see if they would rebarrel a 243 700 that I rarely ever shoot they were not interested called Hart to have them rebarrel but it's a year's wait so I guess it's going to be a whole new rifle please no Ruger presicion rifles totaly off the radar have 3 very good friends who bought them 2 have already sold them and the 3rd has so much money tied up in it that he can never brake even it's a 6.5 creedmore shoots about an inch a 100 yards stock on a good day thinking of a Tikka super varmint what's wierd about it is it has a 1 in 11 twist another thought is a savage.

I went with a Tikka CTR. Out to 800’ it will take a Hog out. Longer than that I don’t know cause I suck.

I've often thought about rebarrelling my Remington 308. Currently sports an 18" Sporter.

It's a 788 though.

I look at this practically and based on well proven formulas.
Based on the proven two most popular actions in world with the largest aftermarket and parts / compatibility:

-Savage 12 LRP or 10 predator (heavy barrel) or equivalent. The 12 integral receiver/shank for incredible rigidity strength.
-Bergarara - based on the remington 700 much improved. (what the rem 700 should have been but never was).
The standard receiver includes features and quality only found in custom rifles 2 to 4 times the price tag of the bergara.

Both are best value in terms of accuracy out of the box, reliability and popularity.

Sorry to hear that RPR did not work out. My experience has been quite contrary. Sub MOA easily out to 200 yards. Factory 140 grain Bulk ammo.

Used REM 700's can be good shooters. Obviously the bore condition of the rifle and the number of rounds through would have to be considered. I have a 1994 REM 700vs .308 that is a solid 3/4 moa rifle with factory Gold Medal Match ammo. I also have a WIN M70 VHB .308 from the around the same year and it just slightly better than the REM. Both are excellent with handloads. Both have that HS stock and bedding block and were a huge leap in factory performance achieving 1 moa but often much better to the public. Yeah I kept both because I couldn't make up my mind. lol

I would make sure to check thoroughly any used rifle before committing to it.

hope their quality is better than before. had to send mine back to them because the holes they drilled in the receiver were off by a mile. It was really easy to see when I put this large obnoxious scope on a short barrel.

New stock and Trigger and you are set. I like Bell and Carlson stocks.

1993. Bone stock. Just under 3/4 moa with match ammo. Handloads around 1/2"..

If you can you find one in any caliber they're keepers.

that's the problem today I've been a fan of Remington for most of my life do I trust them now ? hard to say from a conversation I had with them last week I don't think I do customer service guy was like talking to a robot we don't honor the warranty of the other owners my reply is I'm not asking for warranty work I'm asking for you to service my Reming ton 700 I will pay for the service answer we do not honor the warranty of the other maker me do you not understand my Rifle was made 30 years ago it's not under warranty after the same thing a bunch more times I ended the conversation so Remington is out for now Ruger seems to be very inconsistent Bergara doesent have enough of a track record for me in that I like to talk to people who actually own 1 so Tikka is in the lead for now

Tikka is a good contender.
Remmys are on the edge of fading away into history, unless they seriously step up their game.
I have read good things about Savage, right out of the box.

That all said, I myself, would love an FN SPR built with the model 70 action. Extremely accurate from the factory. I believe these are no longer in production but can be found for sale with low round counts and some re barreled. Even the 18'' barreled variants are 1 MOA out to a thousand.

Winchester 70s of old are fabulous actions.

I would go with any of these... Savage, Tikka, Sako, Howa, Fieldcraft, Weatherby.
Or build a custom long range rifle. I know a few guys that have.

I had a Remington 700. I had the recall completed and sold it. I like their old shotguns, otherwise I'm not a fan on Remington.

Bergara is a remington 700 blueprint like dozens of others including a BAT, Surgeon, mcmillan, etc ..so the track record of that specific design is unparalleled. Plus in terms of fratures, quality of the receivers and their barrels they give you a package that is as good ir better than other rifles costing w or 3 times more.
We have done extensive tests and threqds in the past and it is one of the best values one can get.
That is also why they open the plant in Georgia and hired the best armey are today orers in the industry to serve LE and agencies using their own bergara parts. They also partnered shilen to get the machining and process to make their barrels the way they are today

You found a M70 VHB in .308? Missed opportunity my friend. They retailed for like $750.00 back then and I see them sometimes online for the same price and upwards of a grand. But again you need to check any used rifle very carefully. 308's are easy on bores and throats but still need to be checked.

With machine tech today I am sure there are brand new alternatives out there and plenty of YouTube video reviews.

Also, a lot of people think tech will replace bad shooting habits and skills. Well, not yet. If you really want to punch very small holes with an under 12lbs rifle on a bi-pod, get in shape, stretch and practice the basics. When they say "see your heart beat in the cross-hairs" that's true. Natural body alignment, secured yet natural shooting position, respiratory pause....ect, all matter.

I also had a NM M1A and regret selling it. Krieger barrel and all. 1 MOA all day long.

I'm sure your right about Bergara but I personally don't know anyone who owns one non of the local gun shops have one in stock so that's a blind alley for me Tikka on the other hand is a known rifle I know people who own them I've shot them there in the stores there owned by Sako and Beretta so it's a pretty safe bet that they will be around for awhile. so it's coming down to a barrel from hart installed by a local smith or a Tikka the only draw back to Tikka is the strange 1 in 11 barrel twist and the 2 stage trigger .

Savage is still in the running but kinda like Ruger there hit and miss most guy's I know that own them either love them or dump them.

Several folks here have Bergaras and Savage 10a and 12. If you can only reach a tikka it is a good rifle but keep in mind the other 2 are better in terms of strength, reliability, afermarket and proven design / track record.
Look for the threads on them.

Thats excesive twist but the decision depends on the bullets you are going to shoot.
Long range right?
Classic or modern loads?
Scoring or reactive targets?
XLR?

Have you ever shot a remington 700?
Bergara is the cadlac of the 700. The one Remington never built.
Savage 12 is also a tank because of the lrp beefed up receiver. Same cut they use in several aupermagnums but in short action.

168gr is not a long range load unless you are talking monolitic/solids.
1:10 will work but it is excessive for the average 168, 175 load.

When you say long range what type of long range? Anything beyond 800 yards?

Any hunting or metal scoring targets involved?
