REMOVE THE FIXED MAG

Long story short, i just moved to Texas and fixed mags are no longer needed for me.

If theres anyone from Erie county i got my AR-15 from Dee Dee's ranch and it seems like they epoxied the button and i would like to remove it so i can release the mag, any suggestions on how to get it out/what hardware to buy for the mag release?

Yeah, just drill it. Mag catches and buttons aren't very expensive and are very easy to install. Don't worry too much if you screw it up. Shouldn't be an issue unless you're really ham-fisted but you want to be careful not to get your receiver.

i have read that people are using drill presses instead of hand helds, i dont want to mess up the lower because i just bought a new P320 M17

A little heat - soldering iron, lighter, small torch, etc. - might soften the epoxy enough to let you pick it out.

Dds mag lock is different than a bullet button, and is built like a backwards mag catch. Drilling out the epoxy isn't going to work because you would still have epoxy in the Allen screw head that you wouldn't be able to get out. Trying to do it that way, you would have to drill straight through the bolt to the other side of receiver.

The best way to get that lock off is on the opposite side where the Allen bolt screws into the catch. It's only a few threads there and will come off easy.


For anybody else that is going to use a dds lock- if you are going to epoxy in the hole it is best to fill it with sponge first, then epoxy the last bit. Now with the smack of a hammer and punch the epoxy and sponge will come out and mag lock can be removed normally.

I put some plumbers putty in mine first. I’m genius like you as well.

Op I’d use a larger drill bit to remove the bulk of the export out of the main throat. Then take a smaller drill bit and drill as much as you can without any pressure or force on the Allen key. Then I’d take a pick to get out as much as you can. Place the Allen key in the Allen screw any resistance pick again or tap lightly with a hammer.

There's no spring, and unlocking and changing out the magazine takes way longer than even the slowest top-loading procedure.

As long as every gun store around is openly selling Mossberg Shockwaves with easily removable stocks, together with armbraces that replace said stocks, I am not going to get wound up about disabling the screws on my maglocks or grips/stocks. It's not even just about moving or the law changing and wanting to reverse it; I might someday need to service the gun. Magazine bodies, and stocks/grips can break, or I might just want to change it.

Of course I am talking about living upstate far west of the Hudson.

I think that people say whatever about the epoxy because it’s one more step before switching back to “illegal” in nys. Then you need more that just an Allen key to covert back. Not saying it’s right or wrong.

It's easy. State police "advise" him to put epoxy in the directions and on the guns he sells. In return they don't hassle him or his business. It's up to you to determine how you are going to install the lock in accordance with state law.

With several hours and appropriate tools I can make *any* semi auto take a magazine, then detach that magazine.

In fact, give me a day in my shop and I can probably make most bolt action rifles into full autos that take a "detachable" magazine. It wouldn't be pretty, but one press of the "trigger" would empty the magazine.

Take any rifle with a magazine inserted (as they would be when found by an officer investigating any of the "fixed magazine" rifles we are discussing), then demonstrate it's ability to "accept" another magazine.
