Sounds good. Narrowing it down now to a couple of $300 ones for 3200 watts or wondering if I should splurge on the 7000 predator from harbor freight. It's been very well reviewed, but is overkill for me and I imagine that, say, 1500 watts from a 3200 would use less gas than 1500 from a 7000.

We lost power a few years back for 4 days. On the 2nd day I built a cable to go from my generator 240v to the outlet for my dryer.

These don't exist, do they--I can't find them--hence why you had to build it? L1430 cable with male on both ends.

EDIT: Just answered my question. I think they don't exist, and are called "suicide cords" lol. I may see about getting a proper outlet installed, but I am absolutely sold on the concept of the interlock instead of a transfer switch. Cheaper, seems better in every way really.

I don't know if they can be bought. I built mine since I already had a 30 foot cable that plugged into the generator. A tip for the other end was a lot cheaper than buying a new cable.

I agree, the interlock is less expensive and more functional.

Irondequoit lost power around me, but I'm on the same grid as Wegmans, and I honestly believe that some tree-trimming maintenance that was done by RG&E a year or two ago helped a lot. Took tons of limbs out from the lines between the houses (behind us), and I really think that made a difference. Lots of my neighborhood lost power though, I went out Wednesday/Thurs/Fri to help remove limbs and trees from the road with my chainsaw and some buddies. Got plenty of wood to split. Don't have a generator, but we could use one, just in case. Also have a fireplace, so I could just burn wood in there if I had to. Got gas ranges, so could cook just fine. Would just fill up the tub if it really went bad, keep it for water. That reminds me, I still need to get my LifeBottle I've been meaning to get.

Went out w/ @NirvanaFan on Thursday to cut some trees up, got featured on the news while we were cutting. Huge tree (below) was blown over, blocking the sidewalk. He's got the newer 251 and I've got an older 024av. Both have 18" bars and we beasted through some thick stuff.

Property owner said we could take what we wanted, if we could cut through it. I finished last night on it. Was almost 34" at its widest part. I took a few slices and I want to make a coffee table or something out of them. Gotta slice them thinner and start working w/ them.

The start of my new wood pile, I basically wiped it out with fires last fall. I need to at least get some pallets so I can keep it off the ground. Need to take a new picture, it has definitely doubled in size since Thursday.

I really need a truck, lol. The Subaru was riding preeeeeetty low a few times this weekend. Oh well, make do w/ what you got, right?

You could get a trailer

I was surprised how small the root system is on some of these huge trees.

Pulled the trigger on a generator. Ebay currently has the duromax xp4850eh dual fuel generator, with wheels, electric start, 240 v output, for $299 shipped. There is no better price on one out there. This is a "hot deal" and it's going to run out soon; the generator is reviewed very well and everywhere else (home depot, amazon) sells it at over $400.

I need to store a few days worth of fuel and doing that with gas requires a cycling schedule. With tanks of liquid propane I just throw them in the shed and swap one out each year for my BBQ and forget about them. And it's not like gas is any cheaper; the price of 5 gallon gas tanks is absolutely CRAZY.

Give it 2-3 months, some people will be so short sighted they'll be selling those generators (cheap) they specifically bought for this storm.

Hint: Pay cash so they can't find their way to your home next crisis.

I get a kick out of the people who's yards are cluttered with boats, RV's, jet skis, snow machines, overrated cars/SUVs, quads in other words "toys" and they're too cheap (or stupid) to have purchased a basic generator. A clown ass in my office heads out on annual cruises but keeps tabs on who owns generators for "borrowing" when/if needed. One guy in Alden (news) was complaining about being without electricity/heat for 3 days. People have a real priority problem. They must figure if the government doesn't give it out they don't need it. My personal bitch is the morons who run through red lights when they're out of power.

When things like this happen I think "free firewood". Stock up for next storm. Can't remember when I paid for firewood last?

Yeah, I've got quite the pile working from stuff I've cut and removed while helping out.

Next aerial pic from my neighbor's drone will show the new size of the pile, hahahaha. Enough for now, especially since I don't usually use our fire place, but I'll have plenty for the summer.

already lots of new ones on Craigslist--some for at or above retail price even though the power is back on and generators are readily available online or in lowes because the storm only impacted our area (unlike sandy).

My brother told me the last time they had a big power outage they bought a kerosene heater then returned it when the power came back. What about next time?! How stupid will these people selling new generators that they drove to another city to buy feel when power goes out next time?

We had people on Facebook asking about draining their pipes so their unheated houses wouldn't crack the pipes on Friday and yet now they power is back on they can't find a few hundred bucks for a generator. Even without one our house was fairly warm--I had prepared for an outage. But, the generator was purchased because now I know with one we could live essentially as if there is barely a blackout.
