Safe recommendations.

Much of the quality difference in safe models is the steel thickness in the door and jamb construction. Most of the big box store safes have rather thin steel used in the door (10-12ga) where the high end safes have much thicker steel (1/4"+) for the outer door skin. The jamb weight and construction is also heavier. This is for defense against pry attacks. Higher end safe will also have tighter door/frame fitment to make it more difficult to insert tools to pry with. They will also have slightly thicker steel used in the body construction to slow cutting attacks. Most safes available are vulnerable to cutting attacks given enough time/privacy. Look on Youtube there are some good videos on this subject.

Liberty makes some great safes. Decent size for like $700 also you can find a deal on Amazon.

I have a newer stack on and I’m happy with it. Is it the greatest safe out there no. I’m sure liberty safes are nicer. Mines on the second floor and I couldn’t lift a liberty up there so I went with the lighter stack on and bolted it down.
Winchester safes look nice as well.

A quick tip, if you take the door off the safe its a bit lighter for relocation.

Another thing to keep in mind is water and fireproofing. Depending on your needs these may be important.

Costco has some good large safe deals.

You have me yearning for the good old days with the every Black Friday Liberty Gun Safe blowout sales at Gander Mountain. I regret never pulling the trigger on those deals
... although I have helped some of those, who took my advice, get them up to their second floor and mount them in their new forever homes.

Don't think you'll find many with 1/4"+ plate. Could be wrong. I've got a Fort Knox Titan that uses 3/16" (on door and case) with 10 ga liner on interior and it weighs 1800 lbs dry.

You should get the most expensive safe you can afford. Check YouTube for how some of them suck, especially the cheap ones. And make sure you bolt it down. DeanSafe co. has some good ones.

Sturdy safe uses 7 gauge steel or 3/16" or thicker. Probably the best thickness in the business.

I'm happy with my Liberty - obviously you should get the biggest model you can afford. Mine is getting a bit cramped but I need to reorganize a bit. The wife gets one little shelf for her stuff.

I have some of those rifle rod things to try to keep them upright but the velcro isn't sticking very well.

Honest Gun Safe Reviews, Trusted Since 2013 - Gun Safe Reviews Guy has some really good info - but they recommend a mechanical dial.

Also moving them is a bitch, unless you have the appropriate dolly. They say lots of friends but there's only so many people who can crowd around it to move it indoor. I never did reach out to any piano movers for assistance - kind of don't want to advertise it, ya' know?

edit: Like said above, Sturdy has some hella thick steel, but it's also very expensive.

I was going to recommend you look at Tractor Supply. Most safes are Chinese made and are pretty much only good for keeping kids out. Obviously we can't all buy a safe that costs as much as a car. Liberty is a pretty good option I think. I've got my eyes on getting one some time. Here are a few great videos. The second one will amaze you. $$$$$$$$$$$

Oh man, you should see all the videos of people doing drop-test videos of optics, including firing hundreds (sometimes thousands) of rounds into just a backstop, no targets.

I mean I see your point - the last 1-2 safes looked unscathed. Have a giveaway where the winner gets the safe delivered for free, hell even make it a Liberty-sponsored video.

I've heard of people buying a cheaper safe and bolting it down in a common area where a thief would expect to find it, like a bedroom. When they got it open after whatever, 10 or 30 minutes, they would find it empty. The real safe would be in another location, like the basement. Most people would take off after the failed robbery. Unless it's an inside job not many thieves are going to want to stick around much longer than that.

Spend the extra money get a plate steel door. Rhino has 1/4" plate door and can be had in various body thickness.

what really needs to happen is the laws getting changed .. the first safe is you home .. break into it should be the major penalty .. and hollow type doors should be claymore's

I was looking at gun safes years ago. What I learned was, they don't protect shit. What gun safes are good at is keeping you and your family from having access to guns. Thevies are going to get into your safe in mins with a saw. If you really want something that works, the cost is astronomical.

I have been keeping an eye on these guys for years. If I was going to buy something it would probably be from them. Keep my weapons out of the hands of people that might be in my house lawfully but not break the bank.

I really should get a decent safe.
Is this good one? It's probably a tad more than I want to spend but what are you gonna do? I like that it's Liberty because they sell a kit to bring AC power inside for lights or dehumidifiers. Otherwise I would have to drill a hole in a safe to do that.

Similar stats (and same weight, would still bolt down if you're able to) - but the Liberty has a lifetime warranty. For $200 more that could be worth it - they will replace in the event of a fire or attempted break-in. The Liberty is also Made in USA, Winchester is imported. Liberty says 30 gun capacity, Winchester says 26... but those are impossible numbers if you have scopes, sights, slings, lights etc installed.

Get the biggest you can afford, even if it means you're eating ramen for the next month. Eventually you'll fill it up and have to get another.

edit: I own a Liberty, don't remember size offhand. I have the outlet kit installed but never used it, I have a rechargeable dehumidifier in there I "recharge" once a month or so.

Attach it to the wall with the opening toward the wall. May be a pain to get into but it helps prevent the pry attack.
