That was my first question - what kind of ammo was he using? I didn't think cops used slugs and buckshot with a hostage sounds rather risky. But if the spread was minimal at that range that's probably why he took the shot.

The hostage has to be grateful to the officer even if she has lost some of her hearing. Or maybe not. Wouldn't surprise me if she sued down the road.

Rough rule of thumb of buckshot spread out of a cylinder bore is 1" per yard and that was what, 2 maybe 3 yards? Hardly any spread at all at that distance, basically like a frangible slug at that range.
