My buddy has the weaver and I have the vortex pst ffp 4-16, to ME, the glass is on par with each other. I don't have a lot of time behind either. I do like the ebr-2c reticle better.
Scope in the $500-$700 range.....

I think they are pretty comparable in glass and body construction. I would not be surprised they are made at the same plant in japan.
The Razor is the best one I have. The PST is the only VIPER I would consider just because of the first focal and of course the nice glass.
Although I prefer the x5 of the Weaver vs x4 maganification range of the viper pst they both give very nice picture and featuers for the money and
with mil-mil/mrad options they are very versatile and practical for tactical use.
The WEaver deal for the 3-15 FFP at natchezss is hard to beat.
The 4-20 is also a perfect magnification range with the 699 natchezss price also not easy to overlook.
Like you said it is hard to find something with first focal and with that quality below for $700 or less.

That is a great price on the weaver. i might have to check them out lol. I was going to move my pst to my wife's rifle that I am slapping together for her. I am in the market for a scope......hmmmmmm
What will the firearm be used for? What distances will you be shooting?
Those are the important questions. For the type of shooting I do FFP is not a must, clear picture at high magnification is. I am going with the vortex golden eagle to put on my Savage 12 LRP.

It will be used to save the word from terrorists at world record distances. I'm going to grow my beard out and look "tactical" so I need every feature I will never use. HA I'm going to be punching paper at 300 meters and less most of the time. I have access to an 850 yard range but that will be on rare occasions. I'm leaning towards the Weaver. That price is tough to beat.

I might lug the thing into the deer stand once in awhile also. I might be getting old but I like light rifles for hunting.
I had a Niokon ProStaff 5 put on my Howa, 308. It is a FFP scope and I couldn't be happier with it. The price is pretty good for a scope of this quality, IMHO!

That being said, since I finally tore myself away from their suggestions to buy the entry level BDC scopes they wanted for me, I've been looking at slightly more sophisticated Vortex scopes and have settled on 1 or 2 that I'd accept and am working towards. They look amazing and I'd say you're in good hands w/ their quality.

Those scopes can work great like the Nikons that are a good value wiht better than average camera quality lenses from the most modest models.
I am always clear about the comp/BDC reticles and why many times they do not work as people think they do. This is the main issue, lack of understanding
about what they can and cannot do. Once the limitations are understood then the people can decide accordingly.
I use small light comp reticles in some of my sporting carbines and other go-beat-the-bushes guns.
I posted that 3-15 Weavere FFP because in my opinion is the best value one can get with those type of qualities and features and while vortex are also
well built and sturdy made in Japan as well there is no one single in that price range that can provide that quality and features.
The weaver grand slam and tactical have amazing tubes and glass and they track perfectly. The prices at natchezss cannot be found anywhere else.
Even if one thinks one does not need those features, a good scope will serve you for life, even if you change rifles and calibers.

It was more of a joke. It seemed that even though I kind of understood the limitations of the Buckmasters scope I was looking at, y'all were talking me out of it. Granted, it was because I didn't want to learn right away, but it lead to me finding better scopes than that, whether or not I needed those features right then or there.
Even though I have been looking hard at that Vortex 4-12x50 AO, I'll take another look at the Burris and Weaver suggestions you made.

re: the weaver....i am always a bit leery on items that seem too good to be true. i am worried about they hold up to serious use/dropping/rough handling heat/cold etc

Why? It is not that they just arrived to the market. They have been used longer than many other models and they still sell very well.
I have been putting my weaver scopes like the vortex through their paces and they all hole zero no matter what.
Weavers have been popular as "entry" level for some serious duty for quite a while. There is no one single indication that the scope
is not robust inside and out. For all we know they might come from the same plant where they built the high end Vortex and others
brands made in japan including their own more expensive 6-30 tactical weaver.
A 28-30 ounce tactical scope whit that glass quality made in japan and integral tube is not a fragile scope.
You see them at tactical/practical matches where they get beaten like any other high end scope.
Swat teams and patrols setups across the country use these scopes too. I don't think they would if there were any concerns about the robustness.
Not everyone has the budget to get into a S&B $4K police scope.

Same thing with the vortex when you get to the PST models, good quality japanese made.
Once you get into the entry level like the weaver kaspa and Vortex crossfire that all chinese made I have no clue.
All brands do the same and have their budget scopes but the chinese cannot even begin to compare to the japanase made made ones.
I am not saying all chinese are bad. Perhaps there are some decent ones but I don't know them and try to stay away from them.
I think in the budget market one might look into the 3-9 popular department where one can probably find better glass with similar
features. same with the 2-7 department. Once you get into higher magnification then often quality suffers in exchange for features.
And keep in mind the size of the tube and objective has nothing to do with quality. The quality of the lenses and internals is more
important than the size in terms of quality of picture and realiability.

Past two firearms and optic purchases I have done were on new charge cards. They offer 0 apr for 12-24 months plus they give you a statement credit. Best one I have used was a American Express....0 apr for I think it was 24 months and once u put $1000 (not 100% sure if it was $1000) on the card, they gave me a $300 statement credit. Just remember to pay them off before the interest kicks in. If you don't pay it off, you will be charged interest from the original amount. Pay off and cancel the card. If you can't pay it off in the timeframe, I would suggest not doing it. I have a hard time saving so this method works for me.

I know this is off topic, but I wouldn't close those cards - that hurts your credit more than helps it. I know having an open card is like having a hot, single, naked, std-free, gun-toting female lying on a bed asking you to join her (at least it's like that for me), but I wouldn't close it. Cut it up and don't use it again, but they use that against you if you open and close cards.

It normally take me a year or so to pay off. My dad does this all the time and he has said his credit score does fluctuate because of that. I don't do it very often
