There were numerous semiauto conversions of bolt action infantry rifles in the interwar period.
Conversions of the Lee Enfield are perhaps the best known but there were others.

Actually, with enough linear actuators and solenoids I bet you could make a semi auto muzzle loader.

Depends on who you ask. If some manufacturer decides to call it one, another manufacturer of a similar design may not. Some clown on YouTube may as well while another YouTuber will just call it a selective fire rifle.
I'm with you on this. It's a made up term. What's the criteria? Automatic? If so why not a bump stocked equipped semi auto? If the criteria is that it was designed for war, then is a Remington 700 an assault rifle?

Technically to be an assault rifle it needs to be select fire and fire an intermediate power cartridge, which rules out submachineguns(which fire pistol cartridges) *and* battle rifles (which fire a "full power" cartridge).
So, an M16 *is* an assault rifle.
An AR15 is not (no select fire capability)
An UZI is not (select fire, but fires a pistol cartridge)
An M14 is not (select fire, but fires a full power cartridge)
Now "assault weapons" on the other hand mean whatever the left thinks they have a chance of banning this week.

I'm going to open a YouTube channel and start calling a rifle with a compensator and an optic, a race gun.

Make sure you send an email explaining to Ian that you are more versed in this subject than he is (just like you are in ballistics than the FBI and ammo manufacturers, and like you are more versed in the Law than a lawyer or judge) oh and let him know you did the military on the weekends so he knows that you have more knowledge than he does.
And hey if you actually do something like that (we both know you dont have the balls) let us know his response to you telling him he is a clown for thinking assault rifles is a real term

I'm not sure what you're asking. The term was originated by the Germans. They named a specific model rifle literally "assault rifle" and the term was later adopted to mean any rifle that shares those characteristics.
