Legislation is making its way through the Capitol that would let New Yorkers obtain a one-day authorization to officiate weddings.
State law currently allows religious officials and elected officials to solemnize weddings, and the measure scheduled for consideration by the Senate Finance Committee on Tuesday would empower the secretary of state to establish one-day marriage officiants.
The legislation is sponsored by Democratic lawmakers Sandy Galef and Alessandra Biaggi.
The legislative memorandum describes a wedding Galef attended in 2006, where “she was amazed by the beautiful ceremony that took place.”
“The bride’s sister-in-law (was the officiant), and through her personal relationship with the couple, she brought a certain intimacy and connection to the ceremony,” reads the memorandum. “After leaving California and returning home, Assemblywoman Galef had one question on her mind: What law could be passed to allow this marriage to take place in our great state of New York?”
