Shaving Cream for Gun Cleaning

Talking to a buddy of mine at the range the topic of gun cleaning comes up. He tells me one of the cleaners he uses is regular shaving cream. Not the gel stuff the old standard foam shaving cream. He swears it works. Spray it on let it sit and it lifts off the dirt and power residue. This was news to me.
Any one ever try this?

i think they use acids to soften the beard hair, it could work and it could etch the finish.

Well I shave with Balistol so I thought it made sense.

Why not just use any of the myriad solvents available that are designed not to harm the finish of the gun? What's wrong with Hoppes?

Never heard of it. I don't see any need for that. The products that are designed for cleaning metal work really well.

I clean my extended 5 round AR mags with douche. Bow hunting the rut I hang a Tampon from branches. Oh the Tampon does work..... Mags are a joke.
