Does anyone else on here besides me question how some people can be so fucking stupid? If you can't keep it pointed down range, call it quits. Once it's out of the rifle / handgun case, it is always pointed down range. Period. It is an added safety if the other rules fail.

This is why I'm truly grateful I don't have to go to public ranges anymore. I've seen a bunch of stupid shit at public ranges. The worst probably being a guy that started shooting totally oblivious to the fact there were multiple people downrange collecting their targets. In retrospect it was pure madness/stupidity (on my part) going to ranges with the general public. Outright scary in fact.

It's good to get new shooters into guns. Especially those who may be first time shooters or who haven't grown up around guns. But if you don't know what you are doing, please take a class. Research, learn. Take the time to appreciate what you are doing and the responsibility you have. If you know of someone thinking of getting their first gun please talk to them.
It's way too much responsibility to just "wing it" and expect everything to be ok everytime.

More painful to watch in person. I do feel sorry for the victim of course. Before I ever touched a firearm I was of the strong impression that they have a tendency to shoot and that the muzzle must never be pointed at a person.

Unfortunately I think some of this could be due to taking gun safety out of schools. (or it could just be incompetence) People have to learn from gangs, TV or video games now. I was entirely self-taught the first few years I owned firearms, but I took it slow to learn safe handling. Even now if I'm putting something away in the safe and my wife tries to ask me something or talk to me, I ask her to wait a minute so I can be sure everything is clear and safe. Now she just knows to wait.
Guns are inanimate and have no tendency to shoot and sometimes they need to be pointed at another person. This unfortunate accident falls entirely on the shooter for not following any fundemental gun safety protocols: treat guns as if they are always loaded; never let the muzzle cover anything you're not willing to destroy. Keep finger off trigger until your sights are on targer. Positively identify your target and what's behind it. I'd also say based on video both the shooter and the victim''s mindset were in condition white at time of negligent discharge seemingly oblivious to the fact that anything could possibly go wrong. I've kept loaded guns in my household with my wife and son since he was an infant and they never once has a tendency to shoot on their own. I've also been working to ingrain the fundemental gun safety rules into my son''s brain since before he was old enough to understand any of it. This unfortunate accident was easily preventable but it wasn't the gun''s fault.

An unwritten rule of gun safety is to ask for help when you have a problem. Don't try to just figure it out because you don't want to look like you don't know everything.
Primarily though, safe direction is everything. Even if you screw up all of the other rules, worst case is an embarrassing hole - but as long as that hole is in something that can take a bullet, they only thing hurt is your pride (and maybe the range ceiling or wall)

As any responsible gun owner would be I was cringing watching him handle that pistol. Basic safety was non existent. I’ve had trouble before clearing a jam from one of my rifles. I set it down and got help from the RO. What a shame this situation was 100% avoidable.
