I am currently a student living in a rented apartment in New York City who is interested in buying my first handgun. I do not currently have a pistol permit and am looking into the process for obtaining one. However, after doing some research, I feel like I am in a unique situation and am confused with how to proceed from here. While I currently live and spend most of my time in NYC near the school that I attend, my "permanent" address is still at my parents' home in a county upstate about an hour away. It is my understanding that NYC and NYS issue two different permits that are not recognized by each other. I want to be able to keep my handgun in my apartment in NYC, but I also would like to have the option of bringing my gun home if I want to. I was reading that having a NYC premise permit prohibits you from taking your guns outside of NYC. Could someone please clarify on this and what the best option is for me at this point. It should also be noted that I most likely intend to remain living in NYC for the foreseeable future.

From what I’ve read, once you obtain your NYC permit, a magical barrier arises. This barrier prevents you from exiting NYC. That being said, if you want it for home and plan on living in NYC, get that permit. Later on if you move to NYS, apply for that permit I guess. You can always ask the county clerk where your parents live, they’ll know better.

You can apply for both permits, from what I heard it is even possible to have the same handguns registered on both permits, it sounded like a pain in the ass but there was a member on the other forum that got it done.

Since, I do not plan to really go out to any shooting ranges and am purely looking to buy a gun just for protection, would it just make more sense to buy a handgun at a gun show out of state or off the street and own it outside of all this regulation?

Well since most states do not require a background check or even a mere exchange of names for a private sale, I don't see how this would be something that is too hard to find. I never said anything about any plans beyond my original post. Just looking to solicit advice. Considering how most people who guns in NYC have them unregistered and do not need to be under any scrutiny or pay outrageous fees, I am wondering if any well else thinks it is fair for the rest of us to put up with this when there are alternatives.
