Not really true. Madison who drafted the bill of rights stated that self defense was the ultimate natural right, including defense against a tyrannical government. The founders writings expanded the widely accepted belief of the right to be armed to defend one's life to include defense against a tyrannical state.

This is America do you think some gun club will have the space . ive known people with hundreds of guns in one collection. I'm sure folks have thousands of guns in private collections There are more privately owned guns in the USA then all the major armies have in the world. More gun owners in the USA then people in Germany. This cat isn't going in the bag anytime soon.

Then there is the liability and insurance aspect.
As a mechanic, I should have a policy on my tool box at work. From past experience, the owner will not cover any loss to my property.
Might just have been him being an ass.

When I was in the Air Force, living in the dorms, we were not allowed to keep our personal firearms in our living quarters.
We could store them in an armory.
Stories were told of SPs ( military cops), firing and fondling guns that were stored there. Don't know how true this was though.
