Only tried to participate at weekly nets I think it was Mt Beacon... was generally able to listen but only made contact a couple times. I purchased the cable don't recall if I programmed these through computer or directly. Here is info on the Orange County Amateur Radio Club (OCARC) nets....



OCARC holds two different Nets, both using the club call sign of W2HO. You do not need to be an OCARC member to join in the fun.

The HF Net meets Sundays at 1pm Eastern time on 3920 kHz.

The 2 Meter Net meets Wednesday evenings at 8PM Eastern time on the Orange County ARES/RACES Linked Repeater Network via the following repeaters:

Graham Mt.: 448.325 PL 123 (Orange County – West)

Goshen: 449.675 PL 162.2 (Orange County – Central)

Mt Beacon: 443.550 PL 156.7 (Orange County – East)

Arden: 147.105 PL 114.8 (Orange County – South)

Walden: 146.625 RX/ 147.885 TX PL127.3 (Orange County – North)

I’m guessing that since you may have manually programmed it, the proper inputs and outputs and PL codes didn’t take.

I’m able to hit 3 out of the 4 in MT Beacon and 3 out of 3 in Washingtonville. Goshen, Newburgh, Walden, and others I couldn’t get. My test was just keying up with one radio, blowing into the mike, and listening to my blowing on my second radio. With MT Beacon and Washingtonville, I heard myself.

If you want when things get better and if Kirsten’s test result comes back negative, (We are under quarantine) I can hook up your Baofeng. I’ve gotten pretty good at programming it with Chirp and the cable to the point that I’ve done quite a few for my coworkers.

I am not licensed. I would have to get with @cgrutt to show me the way. But until then, in an emergency, we can use MT Beacon or the one on top of Schunemunk Mountain in Washingtonville.

Maybe we can meet in a diner and do some programming of our radios with my laptop. It’s really easy. A basic copy and paste of our local repeaters into each radio.

Believe current version of Chirp supports most Baofeng and Yaesu handhelds but probably will need a different cable.

I do believe that CHIRP can be used for the FT-60. I have used FT-60 Commander to program the radio I have. Easy to use.

spoke with a guy for a while today and it looks like I’ll be picking up my first HF rig next week. Older Kenwood TS-570DG and it seems like a decent entry into the HF world. Next will be figuring out the antenna setup.

Was listening to local (Orange county) ARES/RACES repeater last night. Think it was a few staff/volunteers just BSing. Looked into it there are weekly nets on Monday nights that is open to all licensed HAMs and they meet once a month at Emergency Service Center in Goshen. This month's face-to-face will be via teleconference. More info here Meetings

Thinking about checking them out and possibly volunteering.

Also thinking about taking the ARRL Intro to Emergency Communications course. There are a couple of FEMA courses that are prerequisites but all of them are free courses given online at self-study pace. The ARRL course is slated at 45-hours over 9 weeks but hey... I've got some time, lol...

I've just recently broke out my baofangs. I don't know much about them, and just finished programming according to this guide. The only other local thing I programed in was my towns office of emergency Management. Everything else seems to be encrypted. Also, I added the Murs channels. Anything else I need to add?
