CG, Is there a list of the local frequencies I should be programming into my Yaesu? I'm totally in the dark buddy. Don't know squat about the channels for repeaters, weather channels, police, fire, etc.

The top 5 or 6 repeaters are linked and can also be accessed via ECHOLINK under call sign KC2OUR. The Orange County Amateur Radio Club weekly 2m nets are on this network each Wednesday at 8 pm. Open to all.
Took Intro to Incident Command System. Pretty good info. Mirrors much of what is happening right now...
Going to take another FEMA course, Intro to National Incident Management Systems tomorrow...
These are prerequisite courses for ARRL Intro to Emergency Communications, which I hope to knock out later this week...

No problem. @Marine Cpl would be better source to help you program (yeah I know they are different radios, but process is similar). I'm still trying to piece this all together myself. If you get stuck give me a ring maybe can help you walk through it. Not that bad once you do a few stations. Duplex offset and Repeater tone are the hardest part but everything needed is shown on the lists. Highly recommend checking out the Wednesday night net on KC2OUR network. You're probably closest to Arden/Harriman repeater 147.105 repeater tone is 114.8. Believe you should use TSQL if that is option, otherwise just use TONE. Believe the transmit offset is +0.6 MHz, or 147.705 if you want to talk.

BTW on last week's net, they were talking about making arrangements to do exam outdoors if this social distancing stays the course. I'll ask for status on Wednesday if I am on. Just take the online exams for Technical license until you are scoring 80% or higher. Should take two - three days to prep enough to pass exam. Less time if you're dedicated, lol... Exam is $15 I think.

If using a baofeng, follow these directions to fix the horrible stock squelch. I made these settings, then bump squelch to 4 or 5 and it made a huge difference for scanning.

Just picked up a nice ICOM handheld transceiver on ebay. Considered the Baofeng and an equivalent Yaesu but cheap shouldn't be a consideration for survival/prepper gear.
Got my tech license a few years ago but never did anything with it. Gonna try to hit some local repeaters and go from there. Long term I would like to build a "go box" with a mobile transceiver with more power, ~50 watts.

I've had a Baofeng GT-3TP for 4 or 5 years, an Icom ID5100a in my truck for maybe 3 years,, still havent gotten around to getting my damn license
Was doing the practice tests and should have taken care of it then life got in the way. We get this chink bug out of the way I gotta get it done.
Does anyone really, deep down, care about not having a license? Serious question. If I ever got involved with this, I don't think I ever would get one.

Theres a lot of hams who really have fits over non licensed users. Best they could do though is get together with a couple other guys to triangulate your position and turn you in to the FCC. Not that the FCC goes out to chaise non licensed users very often. If they figure out who you aree you may get a stern letter in the mail lmao.
Okay, fair enough, good thing I have never cared about pissing anyone off.
I never really though too much about getting into this form of communication; maybe I'll look a bit into it.
Getting started seems pretty inexpensive.
It would be the same thing as showing up to the range without any idea about basic safety rules and not having any idea how to use your gun. It’s not helpful to yourself or others.
it really doesn’t take much to get the technician license. Maybe a couple days of your time and a short, multiple choice test.
But, then there would be a record of me and my training. Not trying to be a pill. Just talking outloud. I am actually kind of impressed and overwhelmed by all the info I have gotten in this thread.
