They keep talking about it... like they want it to happen. 
Generally speaking, if they are talking about it a little bit publicly, something must be "up".
Kind of like COVID was in the news back when it first started in China, way before it even hit the US/rest of the world. No one was really paying much attention.

The death toll would only be part of the problem. A fictional book Warday is one of a limited nuclear exchange.
The economic damage alone would split the country as regional governments would fight ( not necessarily physically fight) for the remaining resources .

Fallout radiation decays relatively quickly with time. Most areas become fairly safe for travel and decontamination after three to five weeks.

Run the simulation with a topol 800kt those are their most common warheads. It's interesting to see how far away you have to be. And that's also assuming Russia hit exactly what they are aiming for. If they are off 5 miles the blast radius will shift accordingly as well

Depends on the type of blast.
A surface blast will produce drastically more fallout than the airburst the military would use (but considerably less immediate damage).
Also, "safe for travel" is not safe to live in 24/7.
You could certainly travel *through* NYC pretty safely only a few days after. But to get the radiation down to levels that would be considered acceptable to live there would take much longer.
Areas around Chernobyl are still not considered inhabitable today, and that was *not* a ground burst nuclear explosion.

A nuke detonated at ground level would be much worse for fallout.
The dirt that gets caught in the initial fireball gets blasted with enough neutron radiation that large amounts of it get transmuted into radioactive elements and lofted into the stratosphere.
There wasn't much fallout in Hiroshima or Nagasaki because they were airbursts and the fireball never touched the ground (the damage was from the flash and concussion, not the fireball)
We had to stop above ground nuclear testing in Nevada because we were irradiation half the state.
When we moved to the pacific for the big tests we irradiated fishermen 150km away.
Fallout settled up to 280 miles away over the next few days.
And while the intensity of radiation drops rapidly, within a few weeks you can walk around unprotected, but for a few minutes or hours.
To get where you can live there 24/7 takes a very very long time.
If you followed today's EPA rules after an explosion like that you would probably have yo bulldoze several entire cities and dispose of them as low level waste.

The majority of surface bursts which generate the most fallout are expected to hit the Dakota's Montana and Wyoming to take out our missile silos.
The rest of the non hardened targets like cities, interstate junctions, railyards, military bases will likely be air bursts ( much less radiation)
I think the point was just that nuclear war is more survivable (if you survive the initial blast) than the majority of the people have been led to believe. If you survive the first month your greatest threat is the breakdown of society and starving.

I've looked at several target and fallout maps. Honestly, the Southern Tier and northern PA look decent.
In east TN, there are likely more but the targets that I have identified are
Oak ridge national laboratory
Knoxville
Chattanooga
The Eastman chemical plant in kingsport
I'm sure there are more. There are many power plants, TVA facilities etc in the area.
You're right. If the weather wasn't miserable and it was in a better state it would be near ideal to make a homestead.
Look at a satellite map of nighttime lights, it's one of the darkest areas east of the Mississippi. There isn't much there worth targeting
