sling swivel stud

dose anyone know if I can move the swivel studs on a synthetic Remington 700 stock from the bottom to the side. I hunt in really steep terrain and i'd like to carry it like an M4 instead of upside down on my shoulder that way i have both hands to grab onto tree's as i'm climbing

They probably have the stud screwed into a part that has been reinforced to receive it.

If you hit a hollow part where you want to install the new stud, you'd have to find a way to reinforce that area. Maybe an epoxy fill?

Have you taken it apart and looked? I had one and it was mostly hollow inside. You may be able to use a couple of machine screw type studs secured with nuts and washers on the inside.

Because my guns are self defense guns and I don't tinker with them trying to rig up shit the same way Jeff Gordon wouldn't rig up some car to win a race. (I don't follow Nascar so insert another name) Buy the right thing for the right job unless the purpose for the gun is just some fuck around toy. I'll pay the $80 and have the real thing.

I've got self defense guns and toys.

The serious stuff doesn't get messed with. The toys on the other hand, I have no problem tearing into - with the full knowledge that if I mess up, its going to cost some $$ to make it right again. As a result, i can do a trigger job on a 10/22 or Mini 14 that I'd put up against anyone else's work and serviceable trigger work on most anything else. I've made parts for guns from metal stock, and made a receiver from scrap plumbing parts and old bullet cases.

If you don't try, you don't learn. Its a nice feeling you get when you can take a piece of junk or scrap and make it do what you want it to do.

Just for fun, look at some of the stuff some of the pro shooters do to their guns. They seem to run pretty well.

pull the butt plate off and look inside .. add some epoxy and build up the area if needed .. ..

my 223 savage syn stock is full of fiberglass bondo now .. and the voids in the forearm is filled with #9 shot and epoxy to offset the weight ..

i hated that hollow sound noise if a tree branch hit it .. and i wanted a bit more weight on it anyways ..

Magpul makes a stock that has Mlok Side slots for attaching an Mlok Stud at the barrel and a sidebar on the butt for attaching the sling. It is what I used to build my 700 .308 SPS Sniper Rifle. It's called the Magpul Hunter. There is also a kit you can get that replaces the lower plate and makes it a magazine feed. Worth the money.

Sounds like he wants to spend zero dollars and zero cents. Maybe he can make something out of duct tape.

Yeah... But it is still good to have options. Never really saw the point in jerry-rigging something firearm related. Rather just do it right and be done. Least I know it won't fall apart and is going to function properly.

That’s where you’re wrong. Unless it’s a range toy the most useful answer is to buy the right thing for what you’re trying to do. Life saving devices is not where you skimp on spending $60.

That last one is what I had in mind but I couldn't recall what its called.

I used to have one on a Weatherby Mk IV 30-06, it was very handy. Gave it to my wife's nephew as he does a lot of mountain hunting out west, and my Weatherby has been relegated to bench shooting ever since I switched my deer hunting to NY (shotgun only here) from still and stand hunting in Michigan.

I think they are mainly use with shotguns but it sould work with a 700 also!

well a few ideas lets not turn this into something it was never meant to be while I'm far from wealthy a new heavier stock would be counter intuitive I'm a 70+ year old hunting in the slide mt. area of the catskills it's tough going for a younger man and getting worse for me every year I don't understand how we started talking about tactical weapons or saving my life when in the opening post I specifically stated that I hunt in a steep area. thanks to all for a couple of ideas
