That was a good find. Saved it to my bookmarks. Kinda bummed I can't snipe with an AR.

Depends on how far you wanna reach out and tough em. All rifles and all calibers have their limitations. Decide what your own wants and needs are, get the right gun, the right scope and ammo. Like others have said... PRACTICE!

Actually the Army uses a beefed up M16 for their Designated Marksman.

With the right lengthed barrel, 1x7 twist and good scope along with a heavy round like the 77gr, you are quite capable at 600 yards easy.
The Marines have one stage of their yearly qualifications at 500 yards with iron sights on a man sized target.

I don't know about now bur the Army used to qualify out to 500 yards on human size silhouette targets.

They now have a range with various pop up targets from 25 yards out to 300 yards.
It's pretty cool actually because you have to be fast.

The paper is nice but I just don't get why they call it sniper ballistics.
I also see sniper rifle this, sniper mat that, super sniper scope, etc... all over the place.
Do people understand the true meaning of the word sniper?

Why do you think this is?
I think this whole shtf run&gun and sniper thing is going to get peope killed if they rely on those approaches.
Still think good markmanship is esential. is like if one has a spare tire in the car they should know how to change it, otherwise how good is it right?

There is a lot more to being a Sniper just like there is a lot more to being a Soldier.
Marksmanship is just a small part of being a Sniper. A Sniper may wait days for that perfect shot. Avenues of approach and egress, concealing your self, scent, ect are components of an art that if not mastered makes a one way mission.
Having the latest AR, plate carrier, and camo pants also doesn't make a soldier. A lone soldier or a group of lone soldiers walking together engaging targets are dead men. You have to operate as a team. You have to know how to cross danger areas such as roads and open fields. You have to know how to react if caught in an ambush with fire coming from two sides. It isn't just stand there and shoot. A group of IDPA champions that can shoot a wing off of a fly would get slaughtered by a trained fireteam of men who are just average shooters that know flanking maneuvers, how to set up ambushes, ect.

People watch to many movies and play too many video games.

Speak for your selves when SHTF I'm going to be running around full tactical geared up sniping people from a mile out. Rambo bandana is optional. Honestly the only sniping that should be done if SHTF is if you have a look out point on the property your thing to defend. You should have flags at all key areas for wind and know the distances of the stable shots. Knowing these two things will allow you take the shot. Also you know the distances now you could be practicing those shots now and have speed cards ready with dope information. Other than that I can say I don't understand sniping in a SHTF scenario unless your doing an assault on a target. If that's the case I'm not sure it would be considered sniping more or less it would be long distance support for your assault team. Realistically if you see yourself doing this then prepare for casualties because people on your team aren't making it out.

a very specific type of person.

certainly kill me today just from physical strain.
I think you are right, Hollywood, TV and the games have a lot to do with this non sense.
One day I saw a few youtubers doing drills running around in a range with AKs and armor getting ready for shtf.
In an attrition type of scenario those goons will not last 5 minutes against trained military.
Look at these guys in their own SHTF running around with their AKs...

to defend their business of opium, ignorance and hate.
The best way to survive a fight is to not be in a fight in the first place.
Learn how to hide and thrive where others cannot survive nor escape and that will give
you a huge advantage. Even surviving in nature never risk too much. Last thing we
want is to get hurt when medical care is not available.

We know that groups of people are way more dangerous than individuals. That's why kings never fought for owning countries and instead sent armies. So if an economy crashes and suddenly there are no products available in stores and governments cannot feed everyone, groups of zombies will get together and forage as a team and for the most part won't run solo. I assume these groups will organize in cities. NYC, Albany, Buffalo, Syracuse, Utica, Rochester, Binghampton, etc. How far would they travel? Probably no further than wherever they finally find food. So maybe 20 or 30 miles from their place of origin? So if you are way the hell out in the middle of nowhere, I kind of feel these groups won't go that far out and find you. At that point it's just about you and your own posse that you put together being able to hunt, farm, filter water, and cut wood for heat and fire. Or am I missing something really obvious?
Just as Will said, it takes more than cloths and cool gear to be a Soldier. It takes even more to be a Sniper. I used to listen to people talk about how good they were because they could hit a target at such far distances. They talked like they were highly trained sniper men.
Anyone can hit a paper target. Let's see how good they are when people are shooting back and moving all around.

Where does one find a preparedness group?
Friends, family, neighbors. Sometimes it is hard to find like minded people. I was lucky, when I worked the gun counter at Gander, I met some great, like-minded people. After many, many conversations, some of us became friends and it grew from there.

Everyone should read (and watch the video of) Ultimate Sniper by Major John Plaster. It won't make any of us into snipers, but it certainly gives the reader a little appreciation for what folks like Chris Kyle and Carlos Hathcock could do.

I read a book about Carlos Hathcock about his missions in Vietnam. There was so much detail to getting to his position that filled up numerous pages for his missions. The actual shot itself was only a few pages.
