With the right lengthed barrel, 1x7 twist and good scope along with a heavy round like the 77gr, you are quite capable at 600 yards easy.
The Marines have one stage of their yearly qualifications at 500 yards with iron sights on a man sized target.
They now have a range with various pop up targets from 25 yards out to 300 yards.I don't know about now bur the Army used to qualify out to 500 yards on human size silhouette targets.

This is exactly why anyone that wants to be part of a preparedness group should be training together.

Just as Will said, it takes more than cloths and cool gear to be a Soldier. It takes even more to be a Sniper. I used to listen to people talk about how good they were because they could hit a target at such far distances. They talked like they were highly trained sniper men.
Anyone can hit a paper target. Let's see how good they are when people are shooting back and moving all around.
I read a book about Carlos Hathcock about his missions in Vietnam. There was so much detail to getting to his position that filled up numerous pages for his missions. The actual shot itself was only a few pages.Everyone should read (and watch the video of) Ultimate Sniper by Major John Plaster. It won't make any of us into snipers, but it certainly gives the reader a little appreciation for what folks like Chris Kyle and Carlos Hathcock could do.
