Interesting discussion. One person summarized the situation pretty well:
The situation is incredibly complex and it's the confluence of multiple factors.
Colonialism and Apartheid laid the groundwork for a lot of what's happening. Centuries of privation will not be undone in under three decades if you still need to make obeisance to capital. The vast majority of South Africans were denied the opportunity to create wealth and to build generational wealth. They were also forcefully removed from their homes. Any talk of redressing these injustices is immediately met with hysterics.
Rampant inequality. I don't think poverty is a causal factor here - there are nations in Africa and around the world that are significantly poorer. Inequality combined with unemployment and an economic system that exemplifies owning capital as the highest moral good breeds resentment.
The failure of the post-apartheid government is the powder-keg that's been lit. For nearly 30 years the ANC has run on a platform of food and housing and jobs and education for everyone and for thirty years they have failed to make a meaningful dent into these issues. Some things have definitely improved, but not by a large enough margin or quickly enough.
The Zuma decade exacerbated fundamental, structural issues in South African society. It's thought that his tenure cost South Africa trillions of rand. He is, however, very charismatic and he's made friends with the right people. Our State Security Agency has indicated that former members still loyal to Zuma have been agitating or instigating a lot of the unrest.
COVID worsened the situation in SA significantly. More unemployment, less money, more expensive goods and services = more resentment and anger.
The arrest of Jacob Zuma was the match that lit the fuse. He has convicted and arrested for contempt of court. Not just any court, but the highest court in the country. He was in contempt because he refused to appear before a commission that's investigating - in part - his corruption. This triggered, at first, protests from loyalists and has now devolved into civil unrest that belies decades of broken promises.
In a nutshell and embarrassingly incomplete, these are what I consider the main factors behind the unrest.
Also sounds familiar.looting by "zuma's supporters".
What a laugh! 99% of these people couldn't give a f. They are just using the mayhem as an excuse to get some free shit.
I googled this and it looks like the source material is this article:
He was noticeable for being the only black man among a group of about a dozen heavily-armed white men who are part of an impromptu militia who have stepped into the vacuum left by a police force hopelessly overstretched by South Africa's worst outburst of street violence since the fall of Apartheid.
The sight of an all-white force of gunmen stopping vehicles carrying mostly black passengers brings back uncomfortable memories of the past. But residents here feel it is their last line of defence.
Completely understandably too.It was his partners first day on the job! He was scared shitless lol
Of course not, when you are "scared shitless" you become "shitless" by evacuating your bowels.......into your pants.... most likely.I bet his pants weren't shitless though.
Wonder if this will ultimately be something like the Hutus vs the Tutsis in Rwanda.
The last comment said he was quoting someone....wonder if there is any truth to that?
Point of order:
Careful with that "colonialism" stuff. SA was uninhabited when the Boers showed up.
Incorrect.Somehow I think the Xhosa and Zulu would disagree.
Incorrect.
Zulu were far north of Boer turf. Xhosa were northeast, but friendly, and as the Boer land was tamed the Xhosa mingled southward.
Zulu stayed north until the Boers made SA better than where the Zulu already were, and then tried to do what Zulu do.
Yup! Majority Rules! Except in the US. The ANC is the culprit. They are gangsta's and are corrupt as hell.If the black majority wants to go on a killing spree I don't see how it can be prevented.
I remember like 10 years ago listening to a VERY far out there conspiracy person talking about how aliens are going to control people via things like WiFi, subliminals through the tv, etc. She said the dumbest will be the most susceptible, and that some will start acting like zombies, specifically in their hive mind behavior. They're destroying all the farms and looted all the stores trucks and warehouses.
What can go wrong?
