Stagger HP and FMJ to deal with cars/cover/soft armor?

The only consideration I have is heavy coats/clothing in the winter. These are a good all year round projectile IMO. They are now making 118 grains that I might switch over to. Also, I reload these myself so I can do thorough testing at a reasonable cost.

I don't think the extra penetration afforded by fmj is worth the trade off of very very poor ability to stop a fight/cause large wound channels.


Body armor will defeat either type.


I get where your thinking comes from, but sticking to quality defense ammo is probably better.

I got the idea from the practice of staggering slugs and pellets in shotguns...

Much harder to swap ammo in a shotgun (unless it's mag fed, then I would still keep separate mags).

Assuming you have practiced enough to be proficient, a mag swap takes seconds.


I think in the real world your chance of ever needing to fire your gun in anger is extremely slim.

You're chances of ammo choice* making a difference when you do are in the "struck by lightning while on the way to cash the winning lottery ticket" slim.


*Assuming any reasonable choice and in a reasonable caliber.

I don’t think your idea will cause any problems, I just don't see much to be gained either. Seems like a solution in search of a problem.

It's like darkening all your carry brass so the ejected cases won't give away your position.


But, I think the biggest argument against it is that none of the professionals who are far more likely than you to ever run into the problem do this.

No police or military that I am aware of do this.

Pretty sure if it was a good idea the SEALs would do it and someone would talk about that.

Maybe just carry ammo that's optimized for both, something like.

The performance in gel and the wound cavity from that compare favorably with HP ammo, but being a high velocity monolithic solid it should perform better than most FMJ against doors and windshields too.

I’m relatively new to carrying but my opinion is this. Stacking different types of ammo in a single magazine is adding a layer of complication that is unnecessary. I will stick with my carry ammo and focus on shot placement if I am forced to engage someone wearing body armor.

And regular 9mm fmj won't defeat body armor anyway so staggering is moot.
