Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam on Wednesday said he will reintroduce gun control measures in the upcoming legislative sessions now that Democrats have taken control of the state legislature.
“Getting rid of bump stocks, high volume magazines, red flag laws. These are common-sense pieces of legislation,” he told CNN’s John Berman on “New Day.” “I will introduce those again in January. And I’m convinced, with the majority now in the House and the Senate, they’ll become law and because of that, Virginia will be safer.”
Democrats took control of the Virginia House and Senate on Tuesday for the first time in more than 20 years. Northam and Democrats will now have an advantage in the assembly to pursue gun control measures that Republicans have pushed against and blocked

In 2017, there were 1,028 lives lost due to gun violence in Virginia, and this number rose in 2018. Since taking office, Governor Northam has consistently advanced and supported legislation that will prevent gun violence in the Commonwealth. Today, he announced a comprehensive package of eight bills that will save lives and improve public safety in our communities. The proposed package includes:

• Legislation requiring background checks on all firearms sales and transactions. The bill mandates that any person selling, renting, trading, or transferring a firearm must first obtain the results of a background check before completing the transaction.
• Legislation banning dangerous weapons. This will include bans on assault weapons, high-capacity magazines, bump stocks and silencers.
• Legislation to reinstate Virginia’s successful law allowing only one handgun purchase within a 30-day period.
• Legislation requiring that lost and stolen firearms be reported to law enforcement within 24 hours.
• Legislation creating an Extreme Risk Protective Order, allowing law enforcement and the courts to temporarily separate a person from firearms if the person exhibits dangerous behavior that presents an immediate threat to self or others.
• Legislation prohibiting all individuals subject to final protective orders from possessing firearms. The bill expands Virginia law which currently prohibits individuals subject to final protective orders of family abuse from possessing firearms.
• Legislation enhancing the punishment for allowing access to loaded, unsecured firearm by a child from a Class 3 Misdemeanor to a Class 6 felony. The bill also raises the age of the child from 14 to 18.
• Legislation enabling localities to enact any firearms ordinances that are stricter than state law. This includes regulating firearms in municipal buildings, libraries and at permitted events.

I have said this to others who retort with phrases like...."Those people in NY get what they deserve. Those who didn't vote for Cuomo should move out of that state." ....... I explained what it's like to have a shithole like NYC to obtain the majority of votes to win the blue conditions. I also reminded them that this is not an isolated issue to just a couple of states. It's spreading fast and hard, worse than any disease. Moving will only be a temporary solution.

"To see grown people with families, with children, stand up and fight for the right to have automatic weapons — for what? To do what? Sumona Das, who voted in Ashburn, also focused on gun regulation.

"It was one of the major issues," Das said. "I think it should be regulated and it should not be in the hands of people we don't want it to be. I have school-age kids, so it's an extremely important factor when I come in and vote."

On the other side, Terry Miller, who has lived in Loudoun County for 25 years and owns several guns, worried about what Democratic control would mean for his Second Amendment rights — a sentiment echoed by the NRA ahead of the election.

Ahead of July's special session, Northam laid out what he wanted in terms of changes to Virginia's gun laws: universal background checks, a ban on assault weapons and high-capacity magazines, and a one-handgun-per-month limit on purchases.

"The gun issue clearly worked for them," said former Virginia congressman Tom Davis of Democrats, noting that gun control groups were more invested in Virginia than the NRA.
