Stripped two pistols today for nitride coating prep

As some of you know I had minor rusting issues on my Ruger LCPII that lead to my slide getting locked up. I completely stripped it today down to the serialized trigger group and will send everything out for nitriding. Not bad to strip it. I also polished the feed ramp prior to this.

The company charges a lot charge of $250 so I asked well what’s in a lot. They said they can do two entire hand guns stripped for $250. I thought well shit I have a para ordnance p12 thay I don’t use much because the blueing is cheap and rubs off so I stripped that too.

Unfortunately I can not do the frame because they can do aluminum and the frame is not magnetic so I’m assuming it’s an aluminum alloy. This rio was very easy to strip as well.

I’ll ship this out Tuesday through USPS priority and they should get it Friday. Said 5-7 day turn around so hopefully have it back right before election time. I’ll ensure it for $1,200.

They say the nitride coating is good for corrosion resistance, strengthens the steel and makes it have more lubricity. Sounds too good to be true but make sense if you read the science behind it. Also the company does all the prep for this price as well.
I’ll let you all know how it turns out. I’m doing the matte finish.

Just from carrying it. Pins were rusting, slide, and the barrel where it flared and meets the slide. Never got wet and I always carry it in a kydex holster. Lots of on line complaints about this. I’ve noticed the new ones seem to have a newer darker coating on it. Mine has a cheap bluing that basically rubs off. Many speculate that the metallurgy is off and the bluing doesn’t take. Some report rusting like mine after a week of carrying.
No rust on guns I’ve had longer and carry more so it’s weird. I emailed Ruger and they failed to respond.

The original coating rubbed off on the front of the slide so my FIL used KG Guncoat on it and that rubbed off in a few months and it was starting to rust a bit again. I love the gun but I’m done with this and just want it right and done once and for all.

I bet once the finish has degraded to a certain point, the rust starts.

Until then you're probably not going to notice it being degraded.

Iron, as well as iron alloys, rusts because of a chemical reaction known as oxidation.

Maybe storage? You have to look at your other guns and how they are. Unless I've shot corrosive ammo there has never been rust on my guns. Pretty amazing considering the places I've stored my guns over the years before I got some proper storage cabinets. Oh and there was the colt junior that I bought from a pawn shot that had some rust. I nickel plated that to prevent future rust. Are your guys' other guns rusting?

I think I'm Starting to get the hang of this. I'm doing rust bluing using a peroxide and salt solution to cause the rust, instead of a humid box or closet. So far, I'm happy with the results. It took me about an hour and a half to do about 15 cycles of rust / boil / card. Before After

For sure. It’s never been wet though. Also the mag release was getting a lot of rust as well as 2/3 pins were.
I’m hoping the nitriding takes care of it once and for all.

All I can say is up until this point I’ve been very pleased. They have been very responsive to all questions and providing me good feedback. Also their process seems more advanced than other. Hell I emailed 4 other places and they are the only ones that responded. I even emailed that new shop in Lockport that was mentioned on here. Not a peep. Not a good first contact IMO.

Both carry guns are in the very same pistol safe in my bedroom. I have heat and ac in my house so storage conditions should be a factor here. I run my central air all day everyday over the summer. Humidity is around 50% in my house. My pistol safe is on an inside wall as well. My sons closet is on the outside wall in his bedroom and our closet extends past his in our room. My other carry gun is nitride coated/treated so that’s why I’m going with this. It’s more of a treatment than a coating so it won’t flake off like the KH gun coat or cerakote can and does.

Shipped them today. What an ordeal that was. Went to USPS and bought the money order and said now I want to ship this with $1200 insurance and pay for a label there and back. Lady said we can’t do the label back but I could buy enough stamps to plaster on the way back for the return trip. I laughed and asked why can’t I do it. She said we won’t know what’s in the box for the return trip to know the value. I laughed and just left thinking lady you don’t knkw what’s in the box now and you don’t know the value of everything in the world anyway.
Went to ups and everything was going good until she asked what was in it. I said pistol barrels and slides. She said we don’t take guns. I said it’s not a gun it’s gun parts and none are controlled and no serial numbers. She was nice but still said no. I left pissed off. I just went home and printed off two label for ups and dropped it at the main hub in Buffalo. What an ordeal though.

I guess but I was worried if it was lost and it didn’t match then they would deny the claim. Also they told me they just changed the policy two weeks ago. UPS ships gun parts all day everyday.

It wasn’t a hub. It was one of those drop off locations so who knows. It’s done now. That’s all that matters. Paid for ground shipping and figured it would get delivered in 2-3 days and it will be delivered today. $24 for overnight delivery when they wanted $104. Nice savings for me.

Shipped it off on 10/20 and received the parts today. I’m super busy today so I didn’t get to look at all of them but so far I’m super impressed.
they responded in less than 24 hours to every question I had. I stripped the part and labeled all of them in a sandwich bag and took pictures so I knew what was what. I went to unpackaged everything and what I looked at looks awesome. I pulled out a few other bags and every part I had in its original bag was replaced into That bag except the barrels because I shipped slides and barrels together. They also put heavy plastic heat shrink Ed over the slides to prevent damage. At this point I’m 100% pleased. I will look at all parts tomorrow and reassemble them tomorrow.

Nitride does all of that. This process was invented to prolong pistons in tractor trailer engines. And as you can see helps other applications .

Also keep in mind this is a fancy quench salt bath not a plating. Essentially what it does is it adds no material thickness yet it penetrates the top 0.010” to bond and strengthen the metal. It also is supposed to be one of the best corrosion inhibitors there is.

Yes that’s another name for it. Apparently these guys do a better process so there’s no distortion at all, it gets deeper penetration, and better corrosion resistance. If that’s true or not I dunno but seems they have a good reputation. Making breakfast then I’ll start some assembly.

Yes but the place I used if you have enough stuff is a better deal. They charge a lot fee and will do every part on two pistols for $250. That includes slides, barrels, frames, pins, triggers, everything for two pistols.
