Suggest A Good Ar-15 Scope

Okay gents...

I have a 20" upper which is beautifully light weight with a nice fluted barrel and all that jazz. Shoots like a dream with irons, but I always feel an optic unlocks all the true potential. This optic will go in a Larue qd mount.


So, that being said I am at a loss.

I have an 18 "upper with a fixed 12x swfa.
A carbine upper with a great 2-7 Japanese weaver.
A carbine with an aimpoint pro


I'm looking for something general purpose. Probably in the 1-4, 2-7, or 2-10 range.

I'd like to keep it the $2-400 range.

Now, before you suggest a primary arms acss, I had one. I did not care for it. Retcile is busy, there is fish eye, etc. Turned me off from the wonder 1-something. Nothing against PA, i love the company, and even that product works well for a lot of people.

Another thing, I'm leery of Leupolds. I have 3, vx3i, vx freedom, and a vx 2. All but the vx2 have the "Leupold shuffle " where it seems hard to dial them in correctly. If they didn't, a 1.5-5.5 vx3i or a 1.5-4 Leupold would be tops on my list. Anyone have any thoughts on this?


Anyway, this isnt meant to be a bash thread. I'm looking for ideas i have not thought of.

I recently bought a Leupold and IMO the crosshairs are too fat! Seeing how Nikon has abandon the rifle scope business, My most recent purchase was a Vortex, not sure of the model off the top of my head, but it has nice fine crosshairs, clear, crisp, bright down range image and the price was very reasonable. thats where I would be looking. Soooooooo many choices these days, but its a fun process! good luck!!!

If you're not stuck on FFP, vortex strike eagle 1-6. Can often be found for under $250.

If you're looking for a little more, magnification, viper hs 2.5-10 is another nice one.

Rex is a former sniper served in Iraq , runs a sniper school in Texas. He comes off as a little bit of a joker, but I found his reviews very interesting and sometimes funny. He knows his shit when it comes to long range shooting. Primary arms developed the ACC reticle that is in use with the US military 's Trijicon optics . P.A.'s is not as high end , but has good reviews. The Reticle has/is a bullet drop compensator set up for the 556 at various ranges . with a built in range finder (ball park not exact) should make hits on a man size target out 5-600 yards without adjustments . probably not the kind of scope to shoot sub MOA but set up more for fighting .

The trijcion is the better scope at 3 times the price. with the same reticle.

I get 25% vortex at work. I'll see what models they have.

I don't expect to be twisting dials. Focal plane isn't really high on my list to be honest. I do have some turret twisters that are ffp.

The advantage with PA is it can be used as a close quarter weapon on low power, and extend out to max range without have to fudge with turrents or holdovers. Its based on a combat sight , as opposed to a precision sight .

5.56. General use. 25-300 yards is enough. Possibly 50-200 zero.

Sounds like a low power variable magnification optic. Vortex has a lifetime warranty. While I haven't used one yet I've heard good things about Atibal scopes - they also offer a lifetime warranty. Here's a 1-8 sfp starting at $340. I may pick one up next time I'm in the market.

I bought the athlon Midas tac 1-6x for an 18” .223 upper. Seems to be a great optic and the reticle is nice for close up, to a few hundred yards, IMO. It’s supposed to be set up for 68-69gr bullets, which thankfully shoot superb out of it.

No personal experience with the 1-8, but I have heard on other forums that the magnification past 6x is a little fuzzy. I have the 1-6 and it's an awesome scope.

You may even want to consider a red/green dot and 3x magnifier.

It's an older model. And it's 1.25 claim is more likely 1.5, but it's a second focal plane Leupold that's built well and has great glass. Good enough for my uses.

The more videos I watch, the more inclined I am to only get the 6X.

The strike eagles, atibal, and pa optics all share the same Chinese oem. I think for a lot of people they work great, but for my eyes on the 1x settings they all get this fish bowl look for me. Plus my PA scope had a constantly loose eye piece. It would just flop around.


I had thought about the vxr or the xv freedom 1.5x4x with the pig plex.
