Supply Chain Disruptions in the Firearms Industry
There’s a wonderful video of economist Milton Friedman (no relation) discussing how no single person makes a pencil. His point was to show that demand for a product causes people all over the world to perform seemingly unrelated tasks that result in a seemingly simple and inexpensive product being made. The same is true of pretty much everything relating to firearms, optics, accessories and most every product you use.

Between private conversations with firearm, ammunition and optic manufacturers over the past two weeks, along with public information disseminated by major gunmakers, I am fairly certain a major disruption in the supply chain for those products and likely many more is coming, and coming soon.

There is no gun manufacturer that makes every single part or raw material that goes into their finished products. While I can’t say for certain, I’d wager this is true of almost every consumer good on the planet. For example, no gun company makes the steel they use to make barrels or the raw polymer used to injection mold frames—they purchase those materials from third parties.

In the modern economy, when one business is declared non-essential, eventually everything is non-essential. Supply chain disruptions are already hitting the firearm industry.

As someone in the transportation industry i can tell you some warehouses are starting to look like the toilet paper isle at wally world. I have noticed that the food warehouses we go to are still pretty busy and are still well stocked. When the truck stops start to fill up with idle trucks during busy week days we will have a big problem. Maybe @Podmonkey could chime in here. If he still works for Crete i know they haul food,beer, and even some pharma stuff?

I am now working for a local dairy these days. Local runs, hourly pay, home daily. For a while demand for milk was intense. So much so the dairy was short on everything but things have tapered off again the last 2 weeks. Before the panic my case load was from 2-300 cases on the light days and 6-700 on Saturday, the heavy day. For a while there I was delivering 1k cases daily which is the max the trailers can haul. I'm back down to around 400 cases or so, 6-700 on Saturday. The stores around here are slowly catching up on their stock it seems.
I have heard it's hell in OTR land though. Have a buddy that said he sat for a week waiting for a load.
I am super grateful that I have had steady employment in an "essential" industry this whole time.

Its going to be interesting when it starts to impact stuff like car parts, appliances and furnaces and water heaters - stuff we might "need" more than another gun.

I predict break through's in treatment and prevention. This disease is only 6 month old. It's a matter of finding what makes some people symptom free and using that to attack the disease.

This pandemic is already snuffing itself out, like all pandemics eventually do. What speeding COVID 19's passing is its highly infectious nature combined with tge suspected presence of multiple strains that are asymptomatic, meaning that while the official case load is a million or two the actual number of infected is likely 20 million or even more but the majority ofntgese cases either have no symptoms whatsoever or are so mild that the infected person doesn't need any medical attention. Yet these mild or asymptomatic cases are still inoculating tge populations and once tge disease has burned through a population it dwindles and disappears.
This is already happening, notice how the case loads are leveling off, also note similar per capitia rates of infection in areas with little or no restrictions and those with heavy restrictions. This implies the widespread presence of the asymptomatic strains which are going undetected and inoculating those populations. COVID 19 has mutated into its own vaccine, which again is how pandemics usually go.
The far greater harm is being done by these lockdowns, which have been totally ineffective at stopping the spread of this disease to begin with.
Also, if we take into account the actual number of people infected, which is orders of magnitude higher than tge detected cases the, than the death rate fornthus disease is below 1%.
In other words, everybody just calm the fuck down! Stop hoarding all the toilet paper, buy normal amounts of milk, realize that masks and wipes will do jack shit for you and that everything will be fine.
Unless the idiot authoritarians persist in the lockdowns in which case we will go into a depression.

My biggest concern in this whole affair has been difficulty in shopping for home furnishings for my new place and the fact I need my AC installed. I have never given two shits about this pussy ass virus. I have survived cancer, car accidents and other calamitous injuries, some little flu virus gonna take me out? Not bloody likely!
