Something similar happened to me once too. I was set up for perch and other pan fish but hooked a monster Pike. No net, didn't have my long nose pliers or any such thing. And just like here everytime I got it to the bank it flopped around like hell. In my case it spit the hook before I could get hold of it. It was the only thing I caught that day too.
