Sword guys, looking for some help.

My fathers long time assistants boyfriend passed away recently and he taught a lot of classes on swordsmanship and sword history. He had a collective of around 160 or so swords he left to her. Pretty much every major type of historical ones ever made through the ages. Life long collection and are all high end replicas that cost some serious cash. She would like them to go as a complete set, but not sure anyone would pony up that kind of coin. Tried to talk her into an auction but she doesn’t really want them broken up.

I will be getting some more detailed info shortly but was looking for some suggestions and maybe some forums to check out after I find out more Thanks!

Im pretty into the sword world and I dont know anyone with that cash.
If I knew the class of the swords and styles(battle ready, costume, wall hangers, original.....)
I could ballpark most of them.
If they are all original, call a museum!

Check them for names and makers marks to get an idea what they are and if they are worth anything. stainless swords areprobably not worth much. At least you can maybe start to organize and see what you have there.

Museums won't offer any opinion of worth, however they can offer an opinion of authenticity and historical significance. They also will only accept the item as a donation, they won't pay for any item.

Well, the idea is you can ateal them cause she want em all gone at once.

I ised to buy antique camera lenses (brass lenses form the 1860s). People that would bot break emup lost their asses. I even troed to consign them and they said no. As a result no one is willing to lay out big cash only to make 20-25%. It just takes too long to get your investment back.

I bet any “buy all” offer will be in the 20% value range. Lets see.

High end modern production swords, such as those from a company like Albion Armorers, can run about what higher end ARs can go for, from $1,000-$2000 or more for particularly fancy ones. Due to the difficulty in find a buyer with the kind of disposable income to buy the whole lot I really think selling them individually will ultimately be faster and more profitable.

I make a living selling collectibles. Few things to remember.
The stories people tell behind collections they are selling are rarely indicative of what they actually have. It can be worthless junk or a treasure, you just don't know.
Husbands tend to hide from their wives what they spend on their collection. If he kept a list of what he paid for each items (only 160 items), that would help her a great deal. Sadly no one does that.
If she trusts you, you can offer her to sell this on commission. She gets paid as the items are sold minus your commission, you do the rest.

Actually, many museums will pay for items, it depends on their collection policy.
Some museums will also pay to show your collection,again, depending on their collection policy.
Public and non profit museums dont pay, but private usually do.

I understand he said most were replicas but that means little. There are replicas worth thousands of dollars and replicas worth 80 bucks. Maker, age, steel, components......all make the difference. There are guys making $10,000 "replicas".
As far as my "original" comment, I was joking, hence the smily face.
Anyways, I can hook him up with top collectors and appraisers.

Agreed.
Ive been in the sword collecting world for awhile. Most collectors look for individual pieces to fit their collections.
"Most" serious collectors have a pretty narrow collecting focus.......Roman era, Viking, Japanese......
Less focused collectors usually dont have the cash for large collections.
It will be difficult to find a single buyer for 160 swords in my opinion.

You will take a big loss in selling an entire collection, that's just how it works. Anything stainless isn't a sword, - it's a sword-like object, strictly decorative.

BTW. The reason she doesn't want to part this collection is simple. Selling her husbands belongings is depressing. She would rather do that once than 160 times. If she is removed from the process, there is no reason for her to reject something, which makes more sense financially.

Do a search for some of the bigger specialized auctions houses (knives, guns, armor, etc.) You'll find your best prices there.

If there are any valuable original swords, contact Christie’s and also Sotheby’s in Manhattan for a evaluation. They wouldn’t be interested in high end replicas. They publicize their auctions online and with printed brochures. They have an international audience and during the auctions there will be bidders calling in from around the world.
