No,I think its all because of Democrats . Results from fears of losing guns every time Democrats take office, Clintons, Obama, Brandon, and locals like Cuomo, Hockul. Every time after a "mass shooting, after new gun laws hit the books. This keeps driving Fucknuts who never bought before to buy because they know they won't be able to buy later. What happened before and after the SAFE ACT? The AR's went from tripping over them in stores to "sold out" in a flash because people wanted something that they can't buy today.

I don't think you'll ever see 15¢ 9mm again. I don't think you can reload for that price given the price of primers. It seems to have settled in around 40 but has been dropping into the mid 30s on occasion. Interestingly enough, quality defensive ammo is still about pre-scamdemic pricing

I think with the defensive ammo not changing much in price is due to two things,

1) most people don’t bill purchase defensive ammo for general plinking and target shooting. Most people will buy a ton of FMJ / ball ammo for plinking and target shooting, and then buy only 1-3 boxes of defensive ammo (1-2 boxes to test out how the round does in their gun, and then 1 box to keep on hand)

2) when the scamdemic /blm protesting hit, most people who had never bought/owned/or even held a gun before got scared and went out and bought one. Those people don’t have any clue about ammo types or defensive vs target vs plinking vs hunting ammo. To them ammo is ammo, and whatever the cheapest ammo they can buy they are happy with. I bet there is a lot of non gun people who become 1st time gun owners that have a bunch of ball/FMJ loaded in their 1-2 magazines and feel confident they can handle whatever trouble comes their way.

I understand your theory, but I'll point out a few things.. defensive ammo still uses most of the same components as fmj/plinking ammo.

Fmj and plinking ammo is going up in price because of supply shortages and shipping/resupply issues.

Biggest issue being primers, if you can't get enough primers to fill FMJ orderes, then you don't have primers for defensive ammo either.


Actually if anything your theory could be used if the defensive ammo prices were going up, since ammo companies are trying to make more ball ammo because thats what's selling. They would pull supply from the defensive ammo to fill orders, meaning less defensive ammo being made

I’m not so sure. I see defensive ammo come in stock and I will see the same 20 round boxes sit on the shelf for 2-3 weeks before it sells. In regards to ball/FMJ ammo I see it come in stock and it sells out in 1-2 days at most. People will buy large quantities of ball/FMJ ammo up to large bulk orders. Even before the pandemic I never saw people in general making large bulk purchases of defensive ammo. I would be curious to see if the sales numbers of defensive ammo for units sold post pandemic is relatively close to units sold pre pandemic. I should preface I am talking mainly in regards to 9mm as that is the pistol caliber I buy the most of.

Right now, my local stores seem to be reasonably stocked. Some of these stores have actually been competitive to online prices for some VERY hard to find, high end ammo, which is something I haven't experinced since 2015-2016. Most of the basic fmj low cost stuff is at least 20% higher than online right now. I'm seeing premium HP ammunition $15 more for a single box of 20-25 rounds locally. It's nothing surprising or new.

The $1 online competitive savings per box of 50 rounds doesn't mean much once state tax is added and you're paying $12-$20+ for shipping on some of these small orders. I could save literally like $45+ off a 200rnd 9mm order from targetsports right now. Since everyone knows about all of these websites already since "2013" I'm sure they know exactly what I'm talking about.

The supply side of both is tightly integrated as you say.

But the normally much higher price for the defense ammo decoupled the demand.

That's why the supply side shortages drove the price of the cheap ammo up to the level of the expensive stuff, but the expensive stuff didn't go much higher.

The component shortage affected both, but the demand was for the cheap stuff, so that's where the price hike hit.

The irony is I am buying a higher % of defensive ammo now than I was 2019.

I rationalize that it's a better usage of my $ and that it hasn't suffered as much inflation and it's still pretty darn close to it's 2019 price per round.

Supply and demand is pretty fickle... Or back in 2019 we were all just getting screwed on defensive ammo and the retail markup must have been astronomical. Their margins were probably so good thet were able to keep the prices flat even with inflation due to lower demand for defensive as people tend to buy the cheapest stuff they can find.

.40cents for fmj today is still cheaper than 1$ per defensive round but comparatively fmj is like 2x what it used to be and defensive is still more or less the same. I hate myself for not loading the boats when you could buy 100 rds of federal fmj brass at Walmart for like 21.99 or something crazy. What the hell was I doing not appreciating how sweet that was. I didn't realize how good of a thing that was.
