Before 1913 Income tax Bill, America got the majority of its Revenues through Tariffs...enough Tariff income we could recind the Income Tax...letting the people decide where to spend "thier" earned money and stop the government from taking it from the workers...nice to dream though.

Thinking this will not be good, short term at the least, for lumber prices.
This will affect new homes market, doesn't bother me. What does bother me is the building trades in general. Home renovations, for both the small business contractor and DIYers. Unemployment will probably increase also with the lack of growth. No product, no work....

Hopefully US mills will ramp up and losses will be temporary.

The entire thing is meant to be temporary.

Tarrffs aren't meant to be a long term revenue source ( at least not with Mexico and Canada). They are meant to be a bargaining chip to get them to control the fentanyl across the border better.

In Westchester I have not paid less than $3/gallon in years.

Since Indian Point nuclear plant was decommissioned, and more Canadian grid electricity was imported, electricity bills have gone up. They'll now climb further. This is nuts given domestic energy reserves.

No matter how much I hate our New York government, it isn't enough.

That only works if you can shrink the federal budget by about 90%. Otherwise the inevitable reciprocal tariffs will cause massive damage to the economy.

OfC, Shrinking the federal government should be a goal in and of itself.

And repealing the the 16th amendment would go a long way towards putting the people back in charge where they belong.

I don’t drink so I’m good. I don’t buy much produce from Mexico. Obviously grains are in everything and cars/car parts they should exclude them because he have a nice back and forth between Canada, USA, and Mexico. Parts are made in both places and much of it is assembled in Canada or Mexico. Not sure where the tariffs are or if they are in both places on the parts and final products.
Seems vehicles and parts would be my biggest impact.

Look how quickly Columbia flipped....like 2.7 hours.
Trump is not a dummy, he knows what he is doing. These countries will fold like a cheap suit.
I honestly believe he won't allow our country to suffer from these tariffs.
Not necessarily because he loves us or the USA, but because he loves to win and worries daily about his family and legacy. There are advantages to having a narcissist in charge.
He will have yo hold out for awhile though, maybe an uncomfortably long time. But, in the end, we will win.
Once a few countries fold, other countries will see they cannot win.
Again, there may be some dark days ahead, but Trump cannot remove the tariffs too early, we will look weak and other countries will just hold out.

Unless I'm mistaken, Gas is Canada is sold by the Liter, and it's 3.8 liters to a Gallon. Gasoline is always more expensive up there and others have pointed out that they lack refineries, then there's the exchange rate that's been around 30% forever...back in '87 when we can to Drum it was 50% and we'd go to Kingston most weekends...We had cash and they had titty-bars and Clubs all over the place!

My real concern is the temporary hike increase in lumber. Mostly because, I myself, am in the midst of a renovation. I am no longer in the building trades for daily revenue. Just a little here and there which, has no effect on me. Usually it's when guys I know just need a helping hand and, I'm not already booked.

I know we export very little. No loss there.

Not I. I'm in agreeance with it. Would be a bonus if it stuck and reverted to pre 1913. Fuck tax theft.

I was looking over the numbers of the last 10 years of trade. Our trade deal with Canada minus oil is a decent one. More of a partnership really. Fair deal. Where it gets out of control is oil. Over 150 billion USD on that 10 year average goes north to our Canadian family. Now we for the most part accept this deal as we really don't need their oil and can drill ourselves for supply. But it helps our northern neighbors. So the real reason is simply Canada under Trudeau has taken advantage of us. Let me explain.

Canada allows migrants to fly into the country without documents. This began to overwhelm their system financially and strained resources. So in response the Canadian govt quietly were suggesting the United States as a final destination for these migrants and pointed them to the resources to get them to the border. New York state a major crossing. NYC housing, credit cards....aka free money the motivation.

Trump is only asking that Canada recognize the great deal they have. One which honestly is a subsidy for the Canadian govt and secure the northern border. That's all. But the Canadian problem is what to do with their current migrant policy which will break the system if they are to remain in Canada. We all know the answer but in an election cycle that would be political suicide for the left wing party in Canada.

As for tariffs as a whole, the United States is an 85% consumer economy. We buy. All spending and mostly on credit. Making nothing really of any quantity for export. This is a bad economic position for any country to be in.

WW2 victory was won because we, the U.S., out manufactured the enemy. Today that formula is the same but we cannot meet those obligations and we are reliant on foreign parts for weapons systems. lol

So we need a hard reset and for the Americans to be exposed to our real situation on the global stage. Trump is getting the conversation started. Wait til you really see how badly our friends have treated us.
