This would not be anything as exciting as some of the ideas already posted here, but I wonder if the ammunition people might come up with an exponentially accelerating propellant.
I have no ideal if it would even be feasible or useful, but what if they came up with a propellant that after having been fired could somehow increase its' expansive gas properties even further. Obviously, this idea might require a longer barrel to be effective. But if you could increase the bullet velocity after the initial firing, and pick up the pace?
Imagine if you could up the velocity of a .45 round by a couple of hundred fps.
I know, probably a pipe dream that is physically impossible. Just throwing it out there.

Electronics incorporated into personal guns.
More types of smart bullets. I could see in the future, a bullet that will track the intended target.Ray/laser guns, I can see that much sooner than later.
For the very near future, just more perfecting what we already have.

This already exists. Powders are multi-base and mixed to maintain a "burn" to maintain pressure for as long as possible. That's how we get powders that are tailored for "short" or "long" barrels. Although you want to have the pressure drop once the bullet gets to the end of the barrel, otherwise you get the famous Mosin M44 Boom/fireball.
That being said, there's no reason why new powders can't be developed to eek more power out of existing cartridges. There is no reason (except for market/consumers) that we can't have a 45 acp cartridge that runs at 35,000 PSI. The same as 9mm and 40 S&W. The trick is trying to keep the pressures low and achieve increased velocity.

I wonder how they could increase the power of .45 ACP without breaking the current models of .45 ACP chambered pistols. I ran +P in my 1911 and broke the front pin off of my ejector. I can see rifle rounds getting amped up, but then projectiles will need some redesign I would imagine.

It was a solid B movie and worth seeing. It's called Blacktop and it was made 15 years ago or so. He's plays a crazy truck driver. The rest of the acting was just meh, but Meatloaf does a great job.

Pretty much. I think it would be interesting to have some sort of "non-lethal" firearm; some sort of effective taser or even the paralytic agent from the TV Show MANTIS - anyone remember that one? Even something like phasers from Star Trek (with the stun setting). But if it doesn't work 100% of the time it's useless. (although it could be argued that sometimes gun-powder guns don't work 100% of the time either)

I have no issue with electronic triggers. There are some very sturdy switches available in industrial automation, not the little dips you see on some paintball markers. Other reason I like electronic triggers is the possibility for novel designs. Much of the current handgun/rifle design is limited by the mechanical linkage between the trigger and the hammer. You could lower the bore axis in a pistol (Maetaba/Chiappa) for example. With a much more simplified mechanical system. Power is obviously a downside, but such as switch system would be so low power it could last for months of regular use. Hell, you could even build a power rail into the handgun that allows red-dots or flashlights to tap into the same system. I don't see "vibration" or "shock" as as downside to electronic triggers. Aircraft and space applications use electronic and motors to control their craft. Which is must harder on a device that handgun recoil.

The future of firearms, rail / plasma guns, When battery technology allows it. Same with lasers, It'll be an evolution on how to propel a projectile then get ride of the projectile all together.
