Most people seem to dislike the updated version, probably based on aesthetics alone, but it is better in every way.

A concave mount makes no sense. Why would they do that?

Yes. Clamping an attachment into a dovetail makes no sense. It would have to be harder to make, and would also mean you can't put it on stamped guns.
This was also the 60s and even stated that they didnt give many shits about optics
One thing Ian surprisingly doesn't cover here is that the real reason the Galil wasn't universally adopted by the IDF was its weight.
It's over 9lbs! The front line units much preferred the vastly lighter M16s. The rear echelon units got the Galil.

You would think that being outnumbered would be a big incentive to get into optics.
Well again it was the 60s,
Shit even just now is the US really realizing that optics > iron sights.
Look at most of the 90s early 2000s not many optics on grunt rifles
We also need to consider the vast improvements in optics that we have seen in the last 15 years.
Even into the 80s many scopes were relatively fragile things not well suited for use on general issue infantry weapons. Also optical clarity and things such as field of view and eyebox/relief and basic stuff like fog resistance and lens coatings were lacking.
It really wasn't until the ACOG came along that a magnified optic had the optical performance combined with the durability needed to make widescale adoption worthwhile.
