I might be more practical to have a water buffalo as a pet. They are very protective!!!

My old 1955 1894 spitting out 7 rounds of 30x30 sorta gets the edge over 5.56 /.223 . And if your trained to round count, I can reload from the 12 round bandoleer

If I ran into a 600 lbs black bear I'd rather have a 170 grain .30-30 or even 158 grain. 357 jsp over the best 5.56 bullet there is.

Even worse, it Rochester and NYC, you can only have 5 in a semi-auto rifle (in Roch, that's just for centerfire.) In my 16" Marling 1894, I can get 9+1 of certain .38 special rounds, and 8+1 of just about any other .357/.38. Of course, 5+reload+5 is still probably faster on a semi, as long as you don't bobble the reload under pressure, but you'll only really know for sure when it's too late to get it wrong.

Comparing the 1894 with my SCR, I would say that:
Strengths:

• Greater internal capacity (in Rochester)
• More controllable (even with .357 Magnum, but .38 Special makes me laugh.)
• More compact (same stock & barrel lengths, but much shorter receiver) and lighter.
• Almost no chance of being banned anytime soon
• Can put on a foregrip (it does work well w/ MI front rail)
• Can thread the barrel and put on muzzle device (haven't tried that yet)
• Can make the stock "collapsible" (never seen it, but it would be legal)

Weaknesses

• Reloading is slower (if you don't bobble the mag on the SCR)
• Rate of fire is slower (extra step in process)
• When full, rounds in the mag tube make it front-heavy.
• No metallic spitzer bullets (Leverevolution work, though)
• Some bullet types/shapes are hard to load reliably (particularly, anything with an open front cavity.)
• Fewer accessories/options (though, available top rails, as well as MI's M-Lok fore-end help.)
• No LRHO.

A (box) mag-fed lever would fix most of those, except the rate of fire. Now, ROF isn't really the most important thing, but it's nice when you need it. Unfortunately, most mag-fed levers have magazine with 4-5 rounds due to the throw of the lever. If the Red Ryd-Ar even comes to market, that could be a fix.

Personally, I think a Winchester Model 92, chambered in 32-20 (also an excellent revolver cartridge), was about the handiest rifle ever devised.

A modern Browning BLR takedown would be the nuts.

You know, I’ve been torn on this. I’ve wanted a rifle in .308 for awhile now, and I love the Henry rifles I already have, but do I want a more “traditional” bolt action arrangement for my first/only long range .308 platform?

The long ranger performs like a sporter bolt gun, but it's not a prs rifle.


I already have two .308s. A chassis set up and a transitional hunter.

Let me clarify, what I mean is it will shoot as well as say, a sporter weight savage 110, vanguard, etc.


It won't take the heat like a heavy barrel will.
