The Surprisingly Solid Mathematical Case of the Tin Foil Hat Gun Prepper
As gun policy discussions unfold in the wake of mass shooter incidents, they routinely end in three buckets. There’s the “tyranny can never happen here” bucket, which the left has mostly abdicated in the wake of Trump winning after they called (and still call) him a tyrant. There’s the “you can’t fight the army with small arms” bucket, which is increasingly unsound given our ongoing decade-and-a-half war with Afghani tribal goat herders. And there’s the “what the hell do you need an AR-15 for anyway?” bucket, which, by its very language, eschews a fundamental lack of understanding of what those people are thinking. I am not a prepper. But I know a few. Some of the ones I do know are smart. They may not be doing as deep an analysis as I present here, on a mathematical level, but the smart ones are definitely doing it at a subconscious level. If you want to understand the perspectives of others, as everyone in my opinion should strive to do, then you would do well to read to the end of this article. To get where we’re going, we will need to discuss the general framework of disaster mathematics.

Prepper Math
There’s a common misconception in the media about the eventuality for which the preppers are exactly prepping. That’s because they’re a diverse group, and prep for many different things. No, they aren’t planning for a revolution to overthrow the government. (Most of them, anyway.) Mostly they’re planning to keep themselves and their families safe while someone else tries to overthrow the government. That, or zombies. (More on zombies below.)

While we don’t have any good sources of data on how often zombies take over the world, we definitely have good sources of data on when the group of people on the piece of dirt we currently call the USA attempt to overthrow the ruling government. It’s happened twice since colonization. The first one, the American Revolution, succeeded. The second one, the Civil War, failed. But they are both qualifying events. Now we can do math.

America’s Second “Civil War” will really be our first!


There has been lots of stuff on the internet, both videos and articles, lately about what they are calling “America’s Second Civil War.” Actually, that title is based on a false assumption. The war that was fought from 1861-65 was not a civil war. It was a war of Northern aggression to prevent Southern independence, because Southern independence would have meant no more tariff money from the South for Lincoln and his friends to finance their pet projects in the North.

The North and South were not fighting over the same government. The South had no interest in capturing the Northern government—they just wanted out, but the North needed the tariff money and so they fought. The slavery question we have all been taught to believe was the North’s Holy Grail was, at best, peripheral.

So if we have “another” civil war, it will be our first one and it may well happen in some form because there are people and groups that want it to happen—people and groups that you can’t sit down and talk rationally with, because they have a vision for a “new Amerika” as part of a “New World Order” and they are not about to compromise on that. The fact that most Americans don’t want that matters not at all to them. They want it and that’s what’s important to them. In their minds all we get to do is pay for it.

In an article by Pat Buchanan that was on www.wnd.com back in August of 2017 Buchanan noted that this country has changed since 1965. Before that, statues of our Southern heroes were venerated and honored, as were our flags. Buchanan said: “What his changed is America herself. She is not the same country. We have passed through a great social, cultural and moral revolution that has left us irretrievably divided on separate shores..” And he noted that, today, the names of Robert E. Lee and other Confederate heroes evoke “raw hatred and howls of ‘racist and traitor’.” In part, our “institutions of higher learning” and the prostitute press are responsible for this—and they do it for a price.

It shows there are 2 different thoughts on the civil war .. Many in the south have a different view of history as written by the victors..

That's a pretty interesting way of looking at things in a way that I hadn't really thought of but basically comes to similar conclusions that I have come to on my own.

My opinion that hygiene things is more important maybe than food,
I have held that opinion for a long time .. I have enough hand soap and dish detergent to last a few years.... Tooth brushes and tooth paste ... Girlfriend thinks I am crazy.... In a SHTF situation a bar of soap could be bartered for a lot on a hot 90 degree day and folks had not a bath in about a month....

You don't need soap to bathe. All you need is water and an exfoliant.

Wood ashes contain lye and work pretty good when no soap is available. If you want to make your own cook the ashes with some lard or left over cooking fat. Lye soap, great for removing poison ivy oils.

I understand that. ... I would rather spend 50 Dollars on soap today than spend the time and effort during a SHTF situation making it. The woman folk would be very thankful not having to use homemade .. At least for a year of two after the event. Don't take a shower for a few weeks in the summer heat and see how much cuddle time one would get..... Having enough shampoo, tooth paste , bar soap could go a long way in keeping a relationship sane ....AND if single you could be the man about town among the ladies just because you don't stink like a rancid piece of meat left in the heat for a week (think road kill in the summer. )

On my "Prep " shelves, I have about 100 bars of soap, at least 50 tooth brushes and about a dozen tubes of toothpaste. We have a decent supply of all sorts of things. Granted, if SHTF really bad and I have to bug out quickly, all that will stay. I have a bunch of sealed tots buried at the land as well.
