With the world on the precipice, when it really starts, there will be no time or avenue to say goodbye. There will be no electricity, as the grids will be fried.

Depending on where you live, you may notice nothing at all until you fumble out of bed and attempt to turn on your coffee maker.
Hmmm, No power.
You pick up your fully charged cell phone. No Internet. No Cell service.

You wonder, Hmmm the little storm we had last night must have knocked out the power. No worries, it will be back on soon, You say to yourself.

The sun is shining brightly, the birds are chirping.
It is a beautiful Western NY Spring morning. As you are taking it in, you notice that you cannot hear any traffic from the highway a few miles away. The birds are really loud today.

The Car Radio! I will run on the Car Radio to find out how bad the storm was.
As you attempt to unlock the door with your key fob, nothing happens.
Nothing at all as you press the button over and over again.
Weird! You say Key fob batteries must be dead. What are the odds?

You see your neighbor, he too is pressing his key fob with no results.

Then you remember:
Weeks and months of the TV playing in the background reporting on Troop Movements and fighting and threats of WWIII. And the President of the United State told us not to worry, WWIII will not happen on his watch.

Oh NO, THEY DIDN’T! Is this all a result of an EMP? Nothing electrical is working. Did they blow it all up?

You then realize that this is the proverbial SHTF and you feel thirsty.

You run to the water tap. It flows, you drink a glass. How long will it flow? You hear your wife wake up and flush the toilet. Crap! I have to stop her. Once the town water tank is empty it will be empty forever

What do you do next? (Please continue the story) How will you ever find out what happened? Does it even matter? There will be millions of people that are just as dumbfounded as you are right now minus those that have been incinerated or X-Rayed with radiation.

Thoughts running through your head. . Your Freezer has stopped freezing. Your Fridge is getting warmer by the hour.

That side of beef and last season’s venison is going to spoil.

Fill every object I can with water. Fire up my grill and start smoking. Grab my prep book I read a bunch of times and start salting/drying meat. Board up windows and doors. Drill out the mag locks. Eat the milk and cheese. Put the ice in a cooler and cool what I can. Execute pre determine plans.

Got tired of waiting for all the permitting and supply chain issues, so I picked up a bunch of used panels on Craigs list, and I'm going to build a 2kw off grid setup on my shop/trailer.




Code enforcement can fuck right off as soon as you put wheels on it.


Still working on the 15kw setup for the house, but it's being a PITA.

Took months to get the plans approved, and then the panels it was approved for are now unavailable. Going to have to start that shit show over.

In the event of an extended outage the trailer may find itself connected to the house through my welder's outlet Will have to throw most of the breakers first, including the main of course . Should be enough to run the refrigerator and freezer, and microwave though.

Heat does not seem to be an issue. It gets cold at night, down into the low 20s. but our house construction is the reason I don't believe we actually used heat at all this winter.

In the summer I would add exterior shade over the windows, and we could probably fire up the AC for a few hours at a time even with just that 2kw setup.

I sincerely hope we have the full setup in before summer. the 15kw setup will let us run essentially business as usual. Maybe some minor conservation efforts would be required, keep your hot showers short, that sort of thing, but nothing too painful.

The scenario you presented here, sounds truly like end of days.
Anything you would do when you got up that morning would be “But for a moment”. After confirming (of course) that this is the real thing,
While scavenging everything thing I can for me and mine, I would probably spend my last days thinking of how all these little “amenities” we have really meant nothing.
Now if this were more of a “conventional”situation,
Then I would try, at the least to have fun with it.
And if the cell service still worked I’d be talking on here and as a result probably end up meeting up with you guys.
But I guess that would be for another thread.

..Try to start the old diesel truck cause it has no computer and if the battery and starter works the GTG, if not then I build a small charcoal fire on a garbage can lid and slide it under the engine to warm it and then roll down the hill and pop start it. The same thought has crossed my mind often. More and more electronic gizmos pops up every year. Manufacturers rely on consumers. And many folks fall into it... example: i-robot, Larger TV, Alexa/ Siri, electronic/wireless this and that, keyless entry, tablets, earbuds, electronic appliances, coffee maker, etc.
I always felt many would be lost if there was long term power outage or we got hit with an EMP. Or SHTF.

I grew up in a time where there was no such thing as cell phones or remote controls. We got up to change the channel. Maybe I'm old school, but I don't have a desire for a lot of these electronic stuff. Even in my cars, I look at these electronic devices as something that will break & cost $$$ to fix.
But I am interested in solar panels. lol

I will not give them any information or share my thoughts or ideas.

I will enjoy watching others in a complete panic.

My friend ... As you have had a bit of experience perhaps you could school some of the folks on this forum as to some of the more important preps that you found useful in surviving .
I mentioned last week .. Told my family everyone should have at least one arctic sleeping bag ..If one is lacking heat then crawling in one some January night could be a lifesaver.

I like your style. Me and the Mrs would be in the same scenario, too old to want to deal with this kind of scenario (even though I'm still a relatively young 50)

I imagine I would try to help the kids by moving out to the cabin surrounded by its small community who would be better prepared for such a situation than the chaos that would ensue in the burbs, or city. The liberal teachings they have had drilled in their head's their entire lives will surely make things difficult for them to cope with such an event.

An EMP strong enough to take out that stuff in there would be pretty impressive indeed. I'm not sure it's physically possible (a nuclear EMP requires a lot of assistance from the earths atmosphere, and there's only so much it can do, no matter how big the nuke).

To generate the big EMPs you need to detonate your nuke at the right altitude. Too high and there isn't enough air to interact with. Too low and the air you ionize isn't spread out enough.

The trailer solar is going to get the redneck treatment, It's going to be homebrew on the cheap. I got 2.4 kW worth of used panels for $600. Tested one out with a resistive load and I managed about half the nameplate output, but it was laying flat in the late afternoon, so I think they will operate pretty close to the expected output in ideal conditions.

The house OTOH is getting a much higher end setup, whenever we manage to get the permitting unfucked.
