If armoured escort enters Lithuania, the challenge shifts to them. What are they (Lithuania, NATO) going to do about it. If NATO was ready for war, it would already happen.

NATO has been ready for war for decades. Russia just hasn't crossed any red lines.
If that happens there are 2 possibilities:
Russia gets the Desert Storm treatment x10. Their entire military would cease to exist in a matter of days to weeks.
Everyone dies in a nuclear holocaust. Russia (and everyone else) ceases to exist as a modern state.
There is no way Russia ends up on the winning end of a tangle with NATO.
At best, China manages to say mostly out of it, then they take over what's left of the world.
Russia has tactical and strategic advantage over NATO for at least few years. NATO doesn't have hypersonic Kinjals.

Actually, both NATO and Russia were not ready for war. Most NATO countries had cut their military budgets, great Britain France and Germany have very small military's. Trump was even bitching about how they only paid like 2% of GDP and expected the US to front the bill and come to the rescue. I was shocked to read that Germany has only 200 top end tanks . The US was doing all the heavy lifting for NATO.
I still think NATO would crush them , but Nato really isnt combat ready like we used to be in the eighty's.
If Russia and NATO go to war everyone loses.

I think there are different levels of mutual destruction. Even a relatively conventional war would be devastating.
Then incrementally raise the stakes with things like cyber attacks, sabotage, biological, chemical, space weapons and attacks, tactical nuclear exchanges, full on strategic nuclear attacks on population centers, government, industry and infrastructure.
Either way NATO and Russia would be very good at killing and harming each other on a local and global level and anyone wanting conflict between the 2 factions must be a certified psychopath.
That goes without saying, but strategic advantage is still a factor in how countries act. NATO had it and was using it to move closer and closer to the Russian border breaking promises it has made, brushing off Russia's objections. Then Russians came out with kindjals and told NATO to pull back. NATO pulled out from Ukraine. These are the ugly realities of the world we live in.
Again, I'm not blinded by patriotism and love of America.
I can readily admit it's crap that we refused to even consider letting Russia join NATO (there was a time they expressed interest) and yet at the same time we kept steadily and incrementally moving closer to their border.
