So I did some thinking last night because I couldn't sleep.
I am really really rooting for a swift and immediate peace agreement. I want hostilities to end ASAP before the world gets sucked into ww3. A fast peace agreement might be the only way to stop it and get back to somewhat normal.
Here is why I think it's critical this conflict gets ended. Now. The west and Russia are setting up for direct conflict and nothing good will come out of that. Let that sink in and ponder how serious that is.
If anyone isn't paying attention or learned from history, the west is fighting Russia via proxy with openly supplied weapons and has essentially declared economic war on Russia.Hell even in Afghanistan we secretly gave some stingers for plausible deniability. We didn't openly brag about it. What we are giving to Ukraine is exponentially more deadly.
(For comparison sake this is somewhat equivalent to either china or Russia directly and openly arming Iraq in 2002 to kill US troops and then trying to economically ruin us at the same time) how would we have felt?
These actions are real and tangible. They are going to harm Russia and Russian citizens. Regardless of your opinion on this war or who is right or wrong, there may be a series of retaliatory actions that happen next that affect us.
Regardless if you are pro Russia, pro Ukraine or still confused as hell. It doesn't make a difference. Because there is no chance Russia just sits idly by and bends over. Not happening. So Russia is going to do something. This is going to escalate. It's very likely more countries get dragged in.
If all the reports are accurate that Putin genuinely in his heart believes that this is an existential crisis to the survival of Russia he's already in his mind committed to going all in. Right or wrong it doesn't matter. If that's his true feelings then it is what it is. We can ignore reality but we can't ignore the consequences of ignoring reality. The west and Russia might have very different ideas about what happens next and just how serious this may get.
Has anyone else noticed a steady increase in western media reporting on Putin being "unhinged" or "losing it"?

I would venture to say they are working on it now. We are still out of cream cheese at our local grocery stores because of a cyber attack in October. Imagine if they target only one major piece of infrastructure. Say the internet goes out in half the country. Say bye-bye to modern conveniences. I'm kind of surprised it hasn't been done yet. This week we shall see.

I agree. I think citizens in the western world are being played by psyops operations via the media. The most obvious one being the "reports" there is something off with Putin. Rather coincidental timing wouldn't you say?
What I don't like is that anyone that looks at things from the Russian perspective is automatically viewed as being in the tank or on the payroll for Putin.
It's practically impossible to get accurate news on this war. I fear a repeat of world war I. The standard textbook history is the series of alliances turned a regional war in the Balkans into a world war. Parallels to our alliances in NATO. Do we really want to risk nuclear war for Ukraine, or Lithuania for that matter?

I don't think a nuclear war is going to happen, how many people on this forum lived through the cold war? I would say that during that time both sides fought proxy wars all over the world, all under the threat of mutual Armageddon, yet we are still here. That threat of mutual Armageddon is still there and I think everyone on both sides recognizes that fact and will act accordingly.

^^^ Nuclear war makes no logical sense. If we are to assume putin has a modicum of rationality in him, which is reasonable to assume, a failed attempt to invade a country would not possibly result in a nuclear attack.

You are talking to a guy who toes the russian line that the holdomor was not a deliberate killing of ukranians.
In 2006 a bill passed in ukraine 233 to 1 condemning the Holodomor as a deliberate genocide. Millions of ukranians were killed. That's the country russia thinks it can pacify? Russia cannot pacify ukraine except via massive, constant violence. And regardless of putin's will russia simply doesn't have the power. It is outclassed by EU alone 3:1 population and 8:1 GDP.
