Well, there was a universally recognized border between 2 sovereign nations.
All the fighting has happened on one side of that border.
Not sure what else there is to it.
It's not like Ukraine committed an act of war against Russia.
Russia has about as much right to tell Ukraine they can't cozy up to NATO as you have to tell your next door neighbor's daughter who she can date.
Your comparison of this situation and that of Mexico attacking the US is just very off.
There were and are reasons for the Russian Army to enter The Ukraine. We do not need to agree with their motives, to understand them. This is not all about land.

I don't think anyone disputes that they had reasons.
But reasons aren't necessarily justification.
Armed robbers have very strong reasons for what they do, money is a strong reason. That doesn't mean it's a justification.
So, unless you're suggesting that Ukraine had raiders sneaking into Russia to conduct acts of war prior to the invasion, I don't see how the Russians had justification.
All I can say is to read through all of these pages. From their point of view, and for their reasons, they were justified in their actions.
I am one that agrees with their reasons. The Russians have outlined openly, why they conducted and continue to conduct these exercises.
I have supported Russia in this adventure from the beginning. I do not support what the Ukraine has done in the past ten years or so. This was and is their doing.
Don't worry. Moldova and Transnistria is about to kick off.

I agree. There is so much missing context and deception put out by the West that it is hard work to arrive at an opinion. The West over time has clearly encroached on Russia, bringing in new countries into NATO since 1989. The situation now similar the 1962 Cuban missile crisis that brought us to the brink of WW3. Except Russia is being asked to accept misslies 290 miles from Moscow and not 1100 miles from D.C.
Most Americans at the start of this were and are unaware the 2014 overthrow of Viktor Yanukovych and Russian elected president of Ukraine. An operation conducted by the CIA with the full knowledge of the WH. Since that time, Ukraine's military and far right wing units like the AZOV units have been killing ethnic Russian in eastern Ukraine for 8 years without any coverage by western media. This entire war is 9 years old with the U.S. and the EU providing assistance for that ethnic cleansing operation. Pure madness. Check out Ukraine On Fire documentary and then its counter narrative Winter On Fire. The latter a poor attempt to counter the truth. As of the summer 2022, Ukraine On Fire has been removed from many platforms. That means you need to see it. VICE news did a piece on it in 2018 where they went looking for the so called civil war in Ukraine. Expecting not to find it, they were surprised that it was raging in full view of the world. The power of suppression.
