Throwing in the towel (as an FFL)

I have not made any secret that I am an FFL. Tried not to speak to much of the shop becasue I did not want to advertise. I did try to share info because there is lots of "stuff" out there. Some of you here have been to visit, one poster who is knowledgeable about the old guns and used to keep us well supplied with them is here often.

Well, it is done. Doors are closed except for appointments. I am so mad I could cry (damn woman thing). I knew when these laws passed 16 momths ago that I would not comply with some of them. Dh agrees that we are not installing cameras that NY wants to control. Ours work well, thank you. EVERY time I have run a BGC, I know I am contributing to a database. An ILLEGL database. I cannot keep doing it. I have tried to rationalize it, cannot.

I will tell ya, I have eaten, dreamed and worked at learning this trade. I literally have spent nights dreaming about rifle, handguns and regulations. I have put in many long days and spent hours searching for ammo and guns thru covid. I know many of my customers to ask about their families or recent hunts and mean it! Some of these guys I have known since they were little kids. I really want to blat sitting here writing this.

As to dh, he has been investing in the gunsmith trade, which he loves. Not to say there aren't firearms that have frustrated him to pieces but he is not one to give up without a fight. The variety and engineering of guns is a field one can spend a lifetime on and not know it all.

I have wracked my brain to find a way to legally keep going without aiding and abetting an illegal act and could not find it. So, we join the ranks of many other shops in this state who are no more.

There is more but I probaby have put to much out there already.

I KNOW I am not wanted by the .gov. I will say this, putting NYS FFL's in the position of either complying with illegal regulations or going away was good. Much like was tried with covid "vaccine" mandates.

I also said to someone a long time ago, there may come a day when you need to put your badge down and walk away. Guess I beat him to it. I have always tried to avoid being a hypocrit. It just hurts to follow thru, bleah.

My long time gunsmith moved across the state line and managed to not only keep many of his former customers, but also attract new customers. Plus he gets to work on a more varied set of firearms.

Sorry to hear that - I know that's exactly what the State wants, and that puts you in an uncomfortable position. It's similar to when someone calls you out for getting a pistol permit.. "You're just giving into the state, playing their games!" Unfortunately unless you want to take that big felonious gamble you sometimes have to..

You look to be about 10 miles north of Pulaski, which is where I had used an FFL for years before they sold and moved to Arizona. They had the same reasoning, though better weather was part of it as well.

I have a friend who is a FFL. They are not going to renew their FFL next year. They just don't want to be bothered with all the stupidity either.

If you think about the ammo background check and how asinine it is that one doesn't need a background check to make their own ammunition. I've reloaded rounds without using a press, just using a wooden dowel and a cartridge gauge. Only cheat I used was a hand seater for the primers. So for $30 someone can manufacture their own ammo without much money and gear.

These politicians that we have in our local counties have done jack shit for us to block our cunt governor in pushing this legislation. If they were for the people, they'd be raising pitchforks and running all over Albany.

To be quite frank, they all should be ousted.

Kids just got back from Maine, anxious to see what they thought. Heard lots of good things about Maine and New Hampshire. The animals keep us tied down for now but some travels are being discussed and how to accomplish them. I would like to check out Vermont, too.

Looking at what is in Assembly and Senate, NY is not done with gun owners. I liken it to the guys that tell me they have never been delayed on a gun purchase and they are not worried, and then I have had to tell them they are delayed on ammunition, the look is almost priceless.

Sorry to hear this but I get it. A close friend of mine is a gunsmith and was an FFL. He already gave up his FFL because of the recent over regulation, and I suspect the shop he works for will close doors in the future due to this shit. He already had plans on moving out of NY, this is just speeding up plans. NY will not recover.

Yes, it's easy to say move to a Free State, I know, I'm one who has said it, and I'm doing it! Even though this a low priority election coming up, a strong message can be sent. So get out and vote in what normally is a very low turn out elections year.

I saw the writing on the wall years ago with NY gun laws and how NY does what it pleases and opened my business in a gun friendly state. I have no idea how dealers in NY can make any money being a FFL. Fighting it is a waste of time and money. I hope you can relocate to a state that is gun friendly and continue your business.

Sad to see you close up shop @CaliberPlus but it's good that you have the moral fortitude not to contribute to the NYS illegal/bullshit activities. My FFL in Syracuse says he'll probably throw in the towel soon too. He said he might continue on for a few of his current clients, but if so it will be scaled back, very limited. It's blatantly obvious what the NYS end goal is, less guns/ammo and more control. over the serfs. Best of luck with whatever you decide to do next!

I don't know how well refusing to sell guns, ammo, etc. NYS LEOs would go over. Seems similar to bakery owners legal problems when he refused to do a wedding cake for a gay couples marriage. I know, guns and cakes have nothing in common LOL. But would the gun shop owner face charges of discrimination like the cake maker did? I think the cake maker won out in the end, but at a big cost.
