Time to Upgrade DoD’s Armory..

Well, I’ve decided I’m getting a semi auto rifle that’s not from WW2 but rather modern day. I have plenty of $$$ and it’s something that I find necessary to get.

I’m heavily contemplating an AR15 but reliability it’s something of a concern. I’d really like one, I’d like to build one that’s bougie but reliability is a turn off so my debate is weather or not to go with it or find a different platform. They really can’t handle getting dirty too well in my eyes.

and no, I will not do a mini14 and AK (even though I find it to be a lot more reliable) is also a no.

AR’s are absolutely reliable and can handle getting dirty no problem. If you buy a nice one or build a “bougie” one…you’re good to go. As long as your idea of “bougie” is good quality parts and not shiny red anodized Strike Industries crap, you’ll be set. High quality parts on an AR matter! If you want to build a high end one and know what you’re doing, it’ll run no matter what. They are workhorses!

Worried about reliability? I have had exactly zero reliability issues with my AR. I think I cleaned it. Once. Last year some time.
It eats everything I've fed it, and likes Mobile 1.
20 years ago I didn't care for them, however didn't own one.
I'll be keeping mine. It's my favorite rifle.

Any gun can get too dirty to run. How long do you plan to run it without cleaning?

I would say under 5,000 rounds without cleaning, and it will be fine.

Why not? The right bullet smashes right through both shoulders just fine out of a longer barrel (20"). 62-69 grain soft points drop them just as hard as anything else within 120 yards. Much beyond 150, and you're right, I'd probably re-think.


Most of our hunting in ny is like 75 yards and in though...


"Stopping powa" is a myth. No animal goes down right away without a central nervous system hit.

do two things, locate a SCR lower receiver and build a nice flat top upper receiver to go along with it. That way you have a gun which is legal in all 50 states without any fixed magazine or other gizmo loading device issues. Then build yourself a straight pull bolt action AR with the same barrel and scope setup. No fixed Mag on non semi auto actions and once you leave the state or SHTF you can swap uppers out ( change the bolt carrier on the SCR) for a traditional feel AR.

The SCR is really the way to go if you want an AR type gun for home defense in NY.

Your perception of unreliability in the platform is unfounded, the AR 15 is the most popular rifle/carbine in the nation for good reason.
You should have several (unsafe act compliant of course) in various different calibers imo.

Well so does .300 win mag, but I think dudes are silly as fuk for hunting deer with one .


I digress...
I'll take a .22 magnum through the heart over a .450 bushy to the guts any day.


I do think 6.8 and 6.5 Grendel are neat, mostly in case I ran into a black bear or something.


Back on topic, the only way it won't be reliable is if you go lowest cost or mis match out of spec parts.


That being said, I never had an issue with any semi auto I owned...except a fraken AR with mis matched gas system parts...

@DoD1776 first semi auto should always be an AR15. There is no competing design that is quite as good and all of them are more expensive. Get a non AR later and yes I am still a big fan of the Galil Ace but the AR is better. Nothing beats an AR. They are affordable, modular, light, ergonomic, accurate, parts and accessories are in abundance and optic mounting is very simple.

Thats okay, you just lack proper hunting skills, no problem.

IMO your need something in a caliber that is common. That should narrow it down a bit. Now pick the firearm.

I just did an internet look around and those SCR's are not available anywhere. I don't even find a back order anywhere, just 'sold out' or 'not in stock'.

Production stopped some time ago. I guess lack of demand. Still available on the used market, but not often. If you ever need parts you would be in a pickle.
